Cancun to Kelowna, 2011

The end! Where did the time go! I guess it is time to start planning the next trip.

July 5, Kelowna, Canada - I am home!!!!

Short 1 hour flight and I am home. Friends picked me up at airport!

July 4, Vancouver, Canada

Long day. Left about noon, for a 3 hour flight to Dallas, 3 hour wait for the 4 hour flight to Vancouver. Supposed to arrive about 8 pm but delays made it 9 pm.

But that was after almost not getting on flight. Turns out I only had a reservation, not a ticket. Took me amost 2 hours to check in! Not sure what happened but seems that when I changed my ticket in Buenos Aires, they only made a reservation, not issue a ticket! What a mess! Got through just in time to walk onto plane!

Trip to Vancouver uneventful. Good thing! And bags actually made it as well!

July 3, Cancun, Mexico

Up early and off to see whale sharks. The van picking me up as actually about 25 minutes early! Good thing I was up and almost ready!

Caught a van to the meeting point, then another van to the boat. The boat went to Isla Mujeres to pick up more people and then we headed out to open sea. So glad I do not get sea sick. 1 girl looked terrible! She was over the side most of the trip! Another got sick but no where near as bad.

Left the Isla about 8.30 am, got back to island about 3. Long day on water, and saw no whale sharks, but did see another pair of mating turtles! Disappointing about the sharks! Apparently they saw lots yesterday. Offered a free trip the next day but I was leaving so nothing I could do.

Still it was nice to be out on the water. There were about 15 boats looking.

July 2, Cancun, Mexico

Went to Market 28, the big market in Cancun. Expected more of a local market but was all tourist stuff. All started looking the same. Did not buy much, nothing really caught my eye!

July 1, Cancun, Mexico

Happy Canada Day. Did not see much recognition here, but oh well!

Went shopping for a tour to see the whale sharks, and found one for Sunday. Figured that would be a good way to spend the last day.

Then went to the beach at the beginning of the main part of the hotel zone. Very nice, but lots of wind, big waves and plenty of current in the water. Again the lifeguards watch very closely to make sure that people do not venture out to far.

June 30, Cancun, Mexico

Caught the local ferry to the Isla Mujeres. It is only about a 20 minute ride. The colors of the water are about 5 different shades of blue. Very nice.

This is a very small island with mostly shops, hotels and restaurants. Talked to guy on ferry and we ended up day wandering around.

WE rented a scooter for about 3 hours and did some driving around the island. There is a large lagoon in the middle of the island, but you can not see much of it as behind the trees.

Tried to get to the southern part but the only road going south was blocked by the police for a bit. So toured around the main part of the town. The east beaches are rocky with lots of waves but there is a nice walk way along the shore.

Stopped at the most easterly point of Mexico. There is a small ruin here, a temple to the goddess of fertility and many other things! Guess it is true as there was 2 turtles in the water that appears to be mating!

There is 1 fairly long beach for swimming on the west and north side of the island. Water is very nice. It is hot, but the sea breeze makes it feel a bit cooler.

Walked the main street, mostly a pedestrian street, stopped and had some dinner and then caught the ferry back to Cancun.

June 29, Cancun, Mexico

Another relaxing morning! Had to check out of hotel and move to new hotel. Caught the local bus for a few minutes and then walked maybe 6 blocks to hotel. This one is old as well, but not really as well kept up, but is still good. I am much closer to downtown, more restaurants and shops to look at. Also this one has a coffee pot and fridge. 2 necessities. Hot coffee in morning and cold beer at night! The other hotel only had other resorts close by.

Went out and had some lunch and wandered around a bit. Many restaurants but also a few small pedestrian streets.

Cam back to hotel and went for swim in pool. Very nice.

June 28, Cancun, Mexico

Rain stopped later last night and did not rain at all today! Slightly cloudy, which was good as if the sun came out it was very hot, and the humidity went sky high!

Caught the bus to the main Caribbean beaches. Buses easy to take, there is basically 1 street. One direction goes to the hotels and beaches and the other direction downtown, so difficult for me to get lost!

The hotel area is a sight! From the bus, all you can see is huge monster resorts, nothing else. There are a few, and very few spots along the about 10 km main area, where you can see the beach and water. Found one of the public beach access points. Yes the hotels are right next to each other so no beach access. Very windy and lots of sand blowing around. There were a few people on the beach. The water was very rough and the lifeguards were even whistling people back closer to shore if they got out too far.

Amazingly there were some turtle tracks up the beach. Looks like they have moved the eggs to a fenced off area to hatch. Some were just a few days ago. I am surprised that they lay their eggs with all the lights along the shoreline.

Also caught a couple of pelicans, taking some sun!

Nice to get out and about. Spent about 1 hour walking along the beach, thinking that I had found the next beach access, it turned out to be fenced off at the road. But there was a hole in the fence to climb through!

Walked to the first plaza (mall). Knew I would fit right in, wearing my mickey mouse tshirt and swim suit, the sign said "Luxury Avenue". And it was just that. An area of the mall only for many of the top, high end stores. I did not even go in.

Rain stopped late last night and did not rain at all today, but then at night, poured again with lots of wind! Slightly cloudy during the day, which was good as if the sun came out it was very hot, and the humidity went sky high!

The hotel area is a sight! From the bus, all you can see is huge monster resorts, nothing else. There are a few, and very few, spots along the about 10 km main area, where you can see the beach and water. Found one of the public beach access points. Yes the hotels are right next to each other so no beach access. Very windy and lots of sand blowing around. There were a few people on the beach. The water was very rough and the lifeguards were even whistling people back closer to shore if they got out too far.

Also caught a couple of pelicans, taking some sun!

June 26 & 27, Cancun, Mexico

Apparently there has been a tropical storm roll through. Rained most of these days. At times just poured with lots of wind. Did not get out much, but did make it to one of the large malls. Spent a bit of time just walking around and then had something to eat at the food court. Food court is typical, but found a place where they have table service and menu cards you can hold!

Food was pretty good as well. The mall is huge and am told it is the biggest in the area. Must be good as there is even a Sears!

June 25, Cancun, Mexico

Caught the bus to Cancun. Great as I walked to bus station and bought my ticket and got immediately onto the bus.

Left about 10 minutes later. Only about a 45 minute bus ride. I am in a different part of Mexico as the first car dealership I saw was a Porsche dealership!

Then a short taxi ride to the hotel. Hotel on the beach, but not that great. very small with lots of grass in the water. Pool looks nice.

The weather is really something. Poured rain this morning with some wind, but within 15 minutes, the sky was clear!

Walked the beach.

Caught the ferry to Cozumel, only took about 30 minutes.

But before you even have a chance to buy your ticket the sellers are on you to sign up for their tour! And then you get more on the ferry! And then there is huge line of tour operators as you walk on the pier to the street! Off course they all have the best price, and will discount for you! They are all the same price! But did sign up for snorkel/glass bottom boat trip along the southern lee shore of the island. Apparently the best area for diving and snorkeling.

3 stops for snorkeling. Turned out there probably was more snorkelers than fish! Also saw a few divers on the bottom. the water is very clear! Strange seeing them on the bottom.

There was a few fish, nothing new other than a flounder which is a strange looking fish. Very flat with eyes on the top of head. Did see a white/beige snake or eel, not sure which. Very nice, and pretty big! The guide touched it, but not a lot. The areas for snorkeling were quite deep, and mostly sandy bottom with some coral here and there.

Was a good trip. Spent the time waiting for the next ferry wandering around the city. This city is set up for the cruise ships. Only saw 1 today. But i do not know where all the people were. There was hardly anyone in town. Could walk down the street and not see another tourist only the shop owners sitting outside their doors!

Went on a tour to Chichen Itza. Amazingly the van arrived 15 minutes early. I was ready, but the next couple just down the street were still having breakfast. The route took me back to Tulum and then another 1 hour plus driving.

These ruins have been reconstructed. Similar to the others. I just do not understand how they worked out the astronomy! Apparently on the spring and fall equinox, the sides of temple create a shadow on the stairs on one side that looks like a serpent!

Really nice but many people showed up shortly after our tour arrived. The site is bigger than Tulum but no where near the size of Tikal.

As one of the wonders of world, all the areas are roped off.

Then stopped at cenote (a sink hole filled with water) for a swim. Really an amazing thing. Not sure how deep it was but the color was very blue. Amazing to have roots trailing down from the ground above. Very much set up for swimming with stairs all the way down to water and then 2 fairly large stone platforms for jumping/diving into the water. Here again, many people showed up. The tour I am on seems to be about 20 minutes ahead off all the other tours. It was the same at the ruins, for lunch, and the cenotes.

Then a stop in Valladolid. A small city with very Spanish architecture. Found in the early 1500s. Only had a chance to walk around the main square. As usual, church and municipal office around the square.

Then ride back to Playa del Carmen, arriving about 8 pm.

Sand here is very nice. Fine and powdery. The water has amazing colors of blue.

Raining very hard this morning when I woke up. And then stayed cloudy most of the day. Nice change.

More rain again last night, but usually only heavy for a few minutes, then light showers or stops.

Walked the beach. Very nice. but here they have some waves. Sand very nice and beach very wide.

Mostly resorts, hotels, and restaurants all the way along. Each with beach loungers set up along the way. More people here, even if cloudy. Many Mexicans out as well as Saturday.

June 17, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Caught a taxi to Playa del Carmen. Only took about 1/2 hour, very close!

Got to hotel but too early to check in, so left bag and headed off to wander around. Walked down 5th Ave, the main shopping area! Very touristy, but not too bad as not that busy. A few people around. Lots of shops, tours "information" places, and restaurants.

Checked into hotel and rested. Very hot and humid!

June 14 to 16, Grand Oasis, Akumel, Mexico

Guess it has been few days, so best get something down. Yes still alive!

This is a very nice place! Did not do much! If you do not count hitting the swim up bar every afternoon! Then having a nap before going for dinner!

Met some people from all over and had a lot of laughs. South Carolina and Vancouver mostly!

Did find the hockey game broadcast live on internet! Very disappointing. Watched with Vancouver couple. They then told me about the riots that night! We changed our place of residence! Very disappointed as well, but mostly embarrassing! Oh well, next year!

Did a lot of walking on the beach, both north and south. The beach in front of hotel is probably the best for 1 hour walking either way.

Did go snorkeling one day. Saw a turtle and a few fish. The reef seems to be mostly dead, but there are spots where is is growing. Maybe destroyed by a storm as there have been a few go through a few years ago!

Surprisingly there are a few turtle nests along the beaches. With all the development and lights this is really something.

Tulum and Akumel, Mexico 2011

June 13, Grand Oasis, Akumel, Mexico

Got breakfast and then a taxi to the bank. Luckily I was able to get my card back and it worked. So in business again!

Did a bit of shopping and then caught the bus to Akumel. Only about 30 minute ride. Got dropped off at a stop on the highway, so had to catch a taxi to resort.

Bus was Pesos 26 ($2), taxi was 120 ($10 for a 10 minute ride). Taxi driver said he would drive me to Playa del Carmen for Peseo 250 ($20).Almost worth doing it after considering another taxi to bus stop here and who knows where the bus station is in Playa del Carmen.

This resort, Grand Oasis, I found on internet, $70 all inclusive, for ocean view. Good deal! Turns out my room is on beach level maybe 30 steps to the water! Very nice. The hotel in Tulum was $50/night and then expensive meals on top.

Found as well that they make very good caipirinhas! Only problem is that you have to walk to bar or swim up to! They do not deliver! Life is tough!

June 12, Tulum, Mexico

To the usual place for breakfast. They have the 'mucho cafe' under control.

Then got a taxi to the Tulum Ruins. Even at 9 am the place was fairly busy. I ended up only spending about 1 hour here as the site is fairly small. But very nice as the ruins are on a cliff overlooking the beach and sea! Very nice. Many people in swimming. Seems that Mexico does not like you to wander too close to the ruins as set paths and routes to follow and the ruins themselves are roped off. The site is small but so are the temples and palace as compared to the ruins in Guatemala. Still very nice. Seemed to be more columns and also carved entry ways, some of which still have red paint. This site is about 1000 years old.

Interesting as many of the visitors were Italian, and suffering from the heat and humidity, so in the shade most of time, which included the tunnels through the walls which made it impossible to get through.

Then walked for abut 1 hour into Tulum. Went to the bank and the machine kept my card! Damn! As Sunday not much I could do, thankfully a woman translated the message on the ATM for me, which said I had to go to bank. Have to wait for tomorrow.

Walked around town a bit. Had to buy a new pair of flip flops as mine broke just as I entered the ruins! It was a long walk into town, especially since I did it mostly barefoot. But this was only when the pavement was not to hot to walk on.

Caught a taxi back and spent the rest of the afternoon reading on the beach or swinging in the hammock!

Big thunder and lightning storm over the ocean as I walked back to hotel along the beach from dinner. Shortly after I got back it started to rain, and I am not sure how long it rained as went to bed. Taxi driver the next morning said rained most of the night. Glad my thatched roof did not leak! And not sure why but power kept going off and on, could not have been the storm as power supplied by generator!

June 11, Tulum, Mexico

Walked for about an hour to the south this time. More resort/cabanas and many private homes. Much of it jungle. Amazes me that some have a few acres and the area is completely raked to keep the dead leaves off the ground. At least they have retained most of the palm trees and other bushes. Anyone looking for a house on the beach, there are many places available, but I have no idea of the price. I am guessing that they do not have services either.

June 10, Tulum, Mexico

Went for breakfast at same place as dinner last night. Again, the only person there. They laugh when I say I want 'mucho cafe'! They are good about it. Pretty good as well, too bad I have to wait until 8 am to get!

Went for a walk, north along the beach. Amazing white sand beaches, and not many people around. The beach seems to go for miles, with the odd rock outcrop in places. Very hot but the water feels great. Seems cooler than Belize.

Some big black clouds formed in the north east and looked like a big storm, but it past over or around and nothing came out of it. Did cool the temperature off a bit!

Back to hotel and had a nap and then out for dinner.

Went to a different place just down the street. Very expensive! Had ribs for $20. But should have said 'rib' as it was 1 rib but huge. A 8 to 10 inch rib with 2 to 3 inches of meat all along! Very tender and very tasty! They cooked everything in a wood stove. Stuffed by the time I got finished.

At least there were about 12 other people in the restaurant.

Belize and into Mexico 2011

June 9, Tulum, Mexico

Ready to catch a 7 am boat to San Pedro and then on to Chetumal, Mexico. Ready! But boat did not arrive until about 8. Went through immigration and customs in San Pedro. Customs was nothing as the bags did not get taken off the boat. 1 1/2 hours later, arrived in Chetumal. They had all of us get off and line up with bags laid out in line as well while the drug dogs sniffed them all. Very interesting. There were 2 GAP tours on the boat as well so almost full.

Caught a taxi to bus station and then 3 hour ride to Tulum. I guess I should have waited to buy bus ticket as they charged me $30 for a $15 ticket. Oh well! Should have known!

Finally got to hotel at about 5 pm. It is a small place on the beach, with only 5 units. I do not have view of beach but it is just over a small sand dune to get there. Very nice, but rustic. Thatched roof, basic but still good. Power is off and on, but that is ok. They generate their own power, as it seems most places do. Advertisements along the road have 24 hour power as one of the amenities!

The area seems to be all the same, many hotels, or cabanas as they are called, with thatched roofs. Some large others small.

Had dinner in a hotel just down the street a bit. Fairly large but completely empty. Waiter said none of the cabanas are occupied. I think I was probably their only customer for dinner.

June 8, Caye Caulker, Belize

Went for a walk around the other end of the airstrip. Took about 2 hours. Almost made it to the place I walked to yesterday but again the path was flooded. Mostly swamp and mangroves with a few large houses along the shore. Could buy a lot for $65000, but mostly water! Lots of mosquitos, a nice place for the vacation home! Also appears that there is not services, no power!

June 7, Caye Caulker, Belize

Went for a walk along the east side of the island, past the airport. Not alot other than mangroves, docks and a few houses. Walked along a path until it was flooded and could not get any further.

Spent the day at the Lazy Lizard, just watching people, swimming.

June 6, Caye Caulker, Belize

Lazy day again!

Off and got my hair cut. Nothing special this time except he did trim used a straight blade, just the blade, but no nicks!

Then off to watch the people at the Lazy Lizard! Very interesting. Cops still there all the time. They actually evicted a couple of local guys!

The water is great here, even if not much a beach and very busy! Then back to hotel and went for swim off the dock! That is the thing to do here as well.

Belize 2011

June 5, Caye Caulker, Belize

Took a sailing/snorkeling trip today. Not much wind so ended up motoring most of the way there and sail assisted motor on the way back. First stop was some coral and grassy areas where there were 2 manatees. Amazing to see them so close. They looked like they were sleeping, anyway they were not too bothered by us being in the water. They are huge!

Then the next stop was a guided snorkel. Saw a couple of green turtles and a huge eel! I just wish my pictures did them justice. But still great to see. The guide took us to a small coral/rock tunnel that we could dive/swim through. Very fun. This was the Hol Chan Marine reserve.

The next stop was to swim with the sharks! Nurse sharks, apparently harmless and maybe so as came back with a parts still attached! There was a feeding frenzy at the side of the boat. Also a bunch of sting rays. Guess this is why it is called Shark Ray Alley.

Also a huge black grouper seemed to like to hang out underneath the boat. Not afraid at all and looked like he had a huge mouth that could have swallowed us whole! Bit spooky!

Was a great trip, and made even better by the rum punches provided for the trip back. Funny thing, they taste great when you have them but they do have a punch that you can feel the next day!

June 4, Caye Caulker, Belize

Not a bad day. Caught a boat to the main dock, then another ferry to Caye Caulker, only 30 minutes away.

Found a hotel, cheap Belize $25 (CDN$12) but not very nice. So made reservation in another hotel just around the corner. This one is $40 but with private bathroom and super staff. And very very clean. On the water too!

Then headed off to the Lazy Lizard. A bar built on the Split where you can drink and appears that it is the place to be. Cheap beers and burgers. Belize$4 for beer, the same price I paid for beer at store on San Pedro! Amazing, prices here are anywhere from 1/2 to 1/3 the price of the other island. This is also much more laid back. As you walk off the dock the island motto is displayed in mosaic "Go Slow!' To funny and they seem to follow the motto everywhere.

Spent the afternoon at the Lazy Lizard where I met a Canadian guy and a Australian couple. Convinced them to do a sailing/snorkeling tour all day tomorrow! Nice way to spend the afternoon!

Lazed all day long. But did take a short walk to the bird watching tower. The one with the sign 'beware of 3 crocs!"

June 2, San Pedro, Belize

Went diving today! 2 dives, first at Sunny Point, about 80 feet, second at Windmill point about 60 feet, 45 minutes each.

Was great to get back into water. First dive great as swam through at small cave/cavern. Coral banks are about 20 feet high. Not alot of color but lots of fish and many types of flowing coral. Very nice.

On second dive, saw a green turtle and at least 10 conch. Live ones! Just very large snails.

June 1, San Pedro, Belize

Walked north for about 2 hours along the beach. Many large private homes, for sale. All built along the beach. The beach no good for swimming, very shallow and full of sea grass. Nice as the road is mostly along the beach.

May 31, San Pedro, Belize

Went on a fishing, snorkeling, beach BBQ trip today. We were supposed to catch lunch but not a lot of luck so the guides went spear fishing for our lunch. Other boats around us catch barracuda but not us! Then the guides cooked the fish (snapper) with lots of vegetables. Was very good!

Then went snorkeling at Mexico reef. This is a reef that is just off shore from the hotel. Was great as there was at least 6 sting rays around. Lots of coral as well, not much for color but still lots. Many fish around too.

Belize 2011

May 30, San Pedro, Belize

Nice relaxing start to the day! Again. I could get used to this!

But borrowed a bike and rode into town. Great as along the beach. It is the major road and mode of transport here. Even though the tides are not that big there is still enough hard sand to ride on, but there is a well worn path along the way! Very nice, some very nice homes with many for sale! Also some nice resorts overlooking the water.

The sand in places is a fine white powder! And the water is very warm but most of the way there is sea grass growing everywhere!

Took about 2 1/2 hours, a long ride, and some of it in soft sand! But arrived and took a bit of a ride around. The airport seems to be in the middle of town. Lots of shops, restaurants and hotels. Had lunch and headed back. Only took 1 1/2 hours as stuck to the road. Dirt/gravel and full of pot holes. Met 1 couple that traded in their golf cart for bikes. They said it was faster and easier. Golf carts is the main vehicle on the roads. Have to admit, going just as fast on bikes as people are in golf carts, just a bit more effort!

Nice to get out and about the place.

May 29, San Pedro, Belize]

Nice lazy start to the day. Lots of coffee, then breakfast and then orientation meeting for the hotel.

Then walked the 15 minute bike ride to the local store. Took about 45 minutes, and it was fairly hot. Lots of lizards.

Turns out the place delivers for nothing! Bonus

I walked back along the beach. Many places for sale and many new places going up.

Not many people around. Must be only about 20 people staying at this hotel. Not a big one but still not many people. Close to being more staff than guests!

Went for a swim in the Caribbean. Very nice. Water is very warm and very salty. The beach along here is has very nice white sand. Some of it is so fine it is like powder. Catch is the water is full of sea grass. Not many people in swimming.

Relaxed, read and napped for rest of afternoon.

Interesting resort. The place is basically shut down by 9.30 pm. Very quiet. Well guarded though, 2 security guys and 2 security dogs!

May 28, San Pedro, Belize

Up for an 8 am start but the tour guy did not show up until 9! Long wait.

The tour was a trip about 1 hour out of Belize City to a a cave where we walked for about 30 minutes and then spent about 30 minutes floating through the cave and then another 30 minutes floating down the river to the starting point. Very interesting. Apparently this cave was used by the Mayans as part of a ceremony of moving into the afterlife, which they called the underworld.

River very low so had to push over some rocks and do a fair bit of paddling. Amazing as wedged in the roof of the cave was a huge log. it was about 6 feet over our heads.

After lunch were driven to the boat terminal to catch the boat to San Pedro. Just caught it in time. 1 1/2 hours later and a stop at Caye Cauker, made it to San Pedro.

Then into a taxi to another dock to catch another boat. This boat would take us to the resort.

A long day with lots of different modes of transport! Car, foot, inner tube, water taxis (3), taxi.

Arrived and just relaxed.

May 27, Belize City, Belize

Up at 7 am, another early morning, for the shuttle to Belize City. After about 2 hours arrive at the border. Fairly chaotic. Trucks parked everywhere. Easy process to leave Guatemala, except the officers asked for 20 quetzales, the local money (about $2.50) for an exit visa. No one was paying so I did not either. Apparently they will try, but it is not an 'official' payment.

Then after about 2 1/2 hours arrived at boat terminal in Belize City. Caught a taxi to a guest house. Interesting as it is run by what seems to be a Chinese family.

Walked around a bit and then had lunch at the park nearby. There were many food shacks, but only 1 was open. Had a great chicken burger, but turned out the chicken was flaked and in BBQ sauce. Actually very good. Ended up talking to a guy that was just hanging around waiting for someone. He had (past tense) a few acres of farm land but he had lost it in a shady deal. So sad! But he seemed to believe that things would work out. He had also applied for a job and had not yet heard anything about it. Later I met him again and he was so happy that he had received a text message that he got the job. Funny as he was so excited about it he had to show me the message.

Went out for dinner at what turned out to be the local bar. The bartender did say that they had a happy hour and the place turned into a night club. We thought we went early enough but I guess not! Lots of people there by the time we finished eating!

So different to hear English spoken all the time! It has been a while since English is the main language! End of January!!

Got a 6 am pick up for a tour to Yaxha ruins. Only 1 1/2 hours in taxi, over mostly paved roads but there was some gravel. And the last bit was gravel. But since we left at 6 am, arrived shortly after 7, but park not open until 8. Lucky restaurant not far away so got some coffee (the first) and some breakfast But as we drove into the parking lot at the restaurant you could hear the air coming out of the front tire! Must have been cut by rock! Well the driver changed the tire to one of those space saver, but it was low as well. He did pump it up with a hand pump, a couple of times.

The park was deserted except for the guards, cleaners and us. Spent a couple of hours walking around the park. Able to climb most of the temples. This is a fairly large site as well, although not as big as Tikal, just as nice. This one is built on a river, whereas there is no water nearby Tikal. They have done a great job reconstructing some of the temples but the best part is that the signage is super! Lots of information about each temple and part, even if in Spanish was able to work out some of it.

Back to Flores, no problem even on that tire!

May 25, Flores, Guatemala

Relaxing start to the day! Very nice after yesterday! Caught a public mini bus to Flores at 11.30 am, and it was on time! It only took 1 1/2 hours as full of school kids so did not have to stop too many times. Spent the afternoon wandering around Flores and took it easy. Checked out other tours and how to get to Belze.

May 24, Tikal, Guatemala

4.30 am start. Ugly. And then a walk to the Tikal site. The hotel is just on the edge of the park. Very nice and only took about 1 hour to walk, part of it in the dark to get to a temple where we were supposed to be able to watch the sunrise, but by the time we got to the top the sun was well up! No problem as it was also very foggy so could not even see the temple that was just down the path. Interesting looking at the areas after walking through most of it in the dark! Amazing place. Monuments/temples range from 400 BC to about 1500 AD. Some of the temples even have 3 layers of building that have been built over the top of previous buildings.

Walked/toured abound the site until about 10 and then spent 3 hours wandering. A huge complex with many different squares and temples. The temples are built in different styles. Many have been restored within the last 10 to 15 years. The ones that have not been restored are just large piles of dirt and rocks. Apparently they are build with dirt and rocks as the many part and then covered with cut stones made of lime. Different than pyramids, these are just temples not tombs. The Mayan tombs seem to be in caves.

Very hot so went back to hotel for a swim. Then back for 2 more hours about 4.30 pm. Not another person around, even the guards at the gate were gone! Very nice to be able to wander around most of the site without seeing anyone else.

Long day in the heat.

May 23, Tikal, Guatemala

2 1/2 hour mini bus ride from hotel to Santa Elena. And that is to travel 100 km. Turns out the bus picks up and drops off people all the way along the route! Very interesting. It was full but not over flowing.

Arrived in Santa Elena and decided to continue on to Tikal Park and a hotel that is just outside the park gate. Only had to wait for 1/2 hour and got on another minibus. This stopped at the local market and waited for more people to show up! This one was full before we left! Very full with people, kids and goods purchased. Very busy market with seller with cold drinks, peanuts, dry goods coming to the windows to sell you stuff! Very interesting. But very hot sitting there.

This trip took 1 1/2 hours to go 50 km.

Arrived at hotel hot and sweaty so went for swim and had lunch delivered to the pool. Very nice.

The pool has many trees around complete with many spider monkeys. Including a couple of young ones that appeared to be playing.

May 22, Poptun, Guatemala

Took a tour to the Naj Tunich caves. These are the caves that were discovered about 1975 and contain many Mayan paintings and many tombs. The cave is also a ceremonial cave. Our tour guide was only Spanish speaking so there was a bit of hand talking, pointing and also trying interpret the many signs (Spanish) But still able to pick up some. Many tombs in the cave, walled up with the rocks that are in the cave. There are actually 2 caves. Able to see the actual tombs and ceremonial fire pit but not the original paintings. These have been replicated in another cave.

It took about 1 hour to drive there over some very narrow, windy and rocky roads. The area also has been almost completely clear cut! All by a machete! They seem to cut some of the jungle, trees for fire wood, and then burn off the rest! Planting corn and grass mostly. The women will wear traditional clothes but the men are dress almost like Alberta cowboys! Hats, jeans and boots. Have actually seen a couple of saddle shops!

Turns out the caves are only 8 km from the Belize border.

Got back to hotel mid afternoon, so spent the rest of the day relaxing, wandering around the hotel/farm and visiting with 3 young guys that have just come off a 6 day trek in the jungle to El Mirador, the highest Mayan temple. They were still very excited.

Interesting day with many different things.

Rio Dulce to Poptun, Guatemala -

Off this morning for a Rain forest walk! The walk turned out to be on the land owned by the hotel. Not much of a rain forest as the ground is very dry. The guide, Emilio seemed to know his stuff, but he was very much into stopping global warming. But even with his political statements he was very good. Great walk as he pointed out and described the various trees and vines along the way. Amazing as many have some medicinal properties that the natives have used for years! A drug store in the back yard.
A few hanging bridges to cross, a hill to climb to a museum and a lookout tower (designed to look like a Mayan temple). Great views of the river and lake as well as the huge rubber plantation on the property.
Then back to hotel for a quick swim and then off on the boat to the bus depot. Caught the bus to Poptun, about 100 km away. Then into a tuk tuk taxi for a ride to the hotel. This is a farm that has many rooms for rent. Organic with lots of homemade goodies! May never leave. The bread is awesome! Hacienda Ixobel! Great place, very warm welcome and is managed by a guy from New York who arrived 19 years ago on his way to South America. He has not made it to South America! But have to admit I am not sure about the guy wandering around the hotel with a rifle! And I do not think he is hunting. Will have to see what is up tomorrow.
May 20, Rio Dulce, Guatemala
Did a boat tour of the Rio Dulce. Left about 9.30 and went to the main dock and then out to the Fort of San Felipe. Protecter for the Spanish. Not a big fort but interesting to see from the water.
Then headed toward Livingston. Apparently you can only get to here by boat. A shocker as it is more black people than Guatemalan. I had forgot this fact.
The Rio Dulce river runs between Lakes Isabel and ?? and runs through Lake ?? to the Caribbean Coast. The village of Livingston is not that big. Took about 10 minutes to walk the main street from the dock to the beach, The beach here was not that great looking, apparently you must travel a bit further to get to the nice beaches.
Lots of boat traffic. Seems to be the way to travel. We went by a couple of bird islands (lots of birds) and a beautiful water lily area. Then stopped briefly at the hot springs. These run into the river. We stopped 2 times, once on the way to Livingson and once on the way back. The first time I did not realize where the hot springs were. But tested the water on the return trip. Really hot! They have rocked an area off. Much to hot and humid here to enjoy hot springs. Even the pool at the hotel is too warm!

Up very early for a 7.15 am start. 30 minute ride to the town of Lanquin, and then 5 hours of traveling to get to Rio Dulce. This included 3 hours on gravel roads similar to forestry roads

and just as narrow. Actually got stopped for a bit as 2 trucks had to take a lot of time to meet on the road, and did get hung up on each other.

got off bus from guest house and guy recognized my COSA t shirt. Turns out he taught at Lake Country about 10 years ago. Amazing as we are in a very small town in the middle of Guatemala! Such a small world.

May 18, Semuc Champey, Guatemala

People here start their days early. Movement started about 5.30 am, as starting to get light! I was up at 6 am.

Took a cave tour this morning. Neat as walked through limestone caves holding a candle. Sometimes had to swim. Water a bit cool but still an neat experience.

Walked/swam for maybe a swim. A few bats in the cave and many limestone stalactites and stalagmites. I think this part of a chain of caves that run for miles.

Got another swing ride after cave. Huge. Fun so had to do it 2 times. The second time was a bit more graceful! Got a very high rating on the first one from the 2 guys on the tour, but that was for the size of the splash, definitely not the style!

Then a relaxing tube down the river back to the guest house. Very nice way to finish.

Lunch and then off to walk to the park to see the Semuc Champey pools. Only took about 30 minutes. But very hot and humid, so had a swim as soon as arriving, and then up to the lookout (mirador). That was a climb. Up rock steps and a very steep set of stairs. The view was amazing. Took about 30 minutes almost straight up, or it felt like it. Was surprised how high I had climbed.

The pools themselves are great, many of them and the water is very clear. But not alot of water running through them, most of the river water runs underneath the pools. The river goes underwater just above the pools and comes out just below. The pools themselves may have been formed when cave roofs collapsed.

Then dinner at the guest house and to bed early again.

May 17, Semuc Champey, Guatemala

Up for 8 am departure. Very early start.

Then a 9 hour trip to arrive at hotel.

Did a lot of talking as there were 5 Canadian university students on the bus. One of them from Rosetown, close to my home town. She plays hockey for the University of Edmonton team and used to play against a girl from home as well! Small world!

2 hours just on gravel roads, but driver was being very slow for some reason!

Arrived at guest house. Very secluded and nice, right on the river. The guest house is a bit 'rustic'. Turns out the power is only on from 6.30 to 9.30 pm. No hot water. Will we survive with no internet for 2 days! But the setting is beautiful. Nice to have a beer and watch and listen by the river. Seems to be even a few fire flies around.

Went for a swim and did the rope swing into river.

Dinner was great, only had choice of vegetarian or chicken. Surprising as there is only about 9 people staying here. Met a couple of guys (US and Belgium) that hitchhiked here. They said they had a ride in 2 minutes. They camped along the river.

Since no lights, in bed by 9 am!

May 16, Antigua, Guatemala

Boat trip to 3 villages on Lake Atitlan. Very nice. The lake is full of algae, and seemed to be everywhere! At least it did not smell. Villages nice, but looked the same. Very small with many markets. That is interesting.

Back about 3 and caught shuttle bus to Antigua.

Arrived back about 7 and just relaxed.

Off at 8 am for the Chichicastenango market. Apparently the largest in Central America.

Supposed to be a 1 hour drive but the traffic on way to market was backed up for miles. It appeared, after about 1 hour stopped on the road, that a truck was stalled out.

At least we did not have to go hungry or thirsty as many sellers were walking up and down the road side.

The ride was at least comfortable, in a car with 1 other guy. He was for Miami and had been traveling in Guatemala for a few weeks. Was great as he gave us some good recommendations.

The market is huge! The streets are blocked off and the stalls are set up in front of the store fronts. Street after street, and all the squares full of stalls selling clothes, meat, plastic goods and second hand stuff. Anything you could want or need! Live dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigs.

Spent a couple of hours wandering around. There were actually 2 churches in the main square. A mix of Catholic and Mayan. Both were filled with smoke caused by fires on the steps and inside.

Did not buy anything, I was able to resist the persistence of the sellers. These were even more aggressive than town!

Many local people in traditional dress were doing the shopping and selling.

Only took 1 hour to come back.

Relaxed for rest of afternoon.

May 14, Panajachel, Guatemala

8 am shuttle, which really left at 8.30 for Panajachel. Interesting ride, many windy roads and mountains. Much of the land agricultural, and most terraced.

Arrived about 11 am. Spent the rest of afternoon having lunch and walking the streets. Small place with mostly hotels, restaurants and shops. The lake is fairly large but you can still see the volcanos on the other side. There is a haze everywhere but not sure if cloud or smog. We did arrange for a boat tour for Monday.

The shops have similar stuff as Antigua but then some of it is different again. The sellers are a bit more aggressive here and will follow you along for a bit.

No several times!

Laundry day! But this time I had to do it! Bit of a shock to the system. Went to a laundromat. Not used to that, but I survived!

Then off wandering around the city. Went to the Convent of San Francisco. Old ruins from the mid 1600s. But have been rebuilt over the years due to earthquake destruction.

Only parts have been redone, much of the place is in ruins.

Also had a look at a photographic display in the Central Square. Appeared to be a one of people that had been hit by water disasters. New Orleans was included as well as many other places around the world!

May 12, Antigua, Guatemala

Up shortly after 5 am! Not nice, but at least the hotel had coffee in lobby!

Off to climb Volcano Pacaya. This is an active volcano, that erupted last year. February I think.

Apparently about 1 meter of rock fell. Most of this rock is black lava rock in small pieces! It destroyed many crops of corn, coffee and tobacco.

Difficult walk as up for about 1 3/4 hours. But worth it! Did not see any molten lava but lots of others. Even walked through the vapou coming out of the volcano, and there is lots of it!

Easy walk down, and back into town. Took about 1 1/2 hours to drive there.

Lazy day today. Did not do much,

Went out for lunch to small local place. Order what I thought was going to be a grilled steak! Well turned out it was grilled steak, grilled chicken, grilled sausage, and grilled ribs! Got potatoes, tortillas and salad with it! The cost was $5. Can't beat that. The bonus was that it tasted great! i have no idea what spice they used but was very good.

Then went shopping! In the local market. Here you can get anything you could want, only if you can find it. It is a huge market!

May 10, Antigua, Guatemala

Took a tour to 2 villages outside of the city. Interesting as they also had cobblestone streets, in most places, and many of the houses were the same.

Stopped to see the ruins of the old palace, but it was in the middle of an elementary school ground. We just walked in and had a look, with all the kids running around and screaming! Must have been the break. Surprised that today was not a holiday as it is Mother's Day here.

Visited a convent that is still active with apparently 6 nuns, but did not see any of the them.

The guide was a very talkative guy, and more so when in one of the villages as it was where he grew up. He seemed to know most of the people we met!

Stopped at one of the community laundries. 2 ladies there with clothes hung all over the place. Turned out to be a mother and daughter. This was about 11 am and by the look of it they had been there for a while. The mother also had 1 hour bus ride to get there. The guide said that these were more gossip centres as well!

Went into one market. Ladies there were very nice. One lady tried very hard to sell me something. I told her that I wanted something different and special. She ended up telling me I was a problem, of course with a huge smile on her face!

Was also interesting to watch a woman weaving.

Costa Rica and into Guatemala 2011

Lots of walking around the old city today. The Central Square, the Cerro to Santa Ana, a lookout over the city

and also many churches. The city is very nice, clean and they have done an excellent job of maintaining the old style.

Even if they have been updated to the Burger King and Macs looks inside!

May 7, Antigua, Guatemala

Out of hotel by 9.45 am, for 1 hour van ride to Liberia airport. 1 1/2 hour wait for the 45 minute flight to San Jose. With Nature Air again, on the Twin turbo Otter.

Then 30 minute wait for the 30 minute van ride to the other San Jose Airport. A 3 hour wait for flight at 5.35 pm to Guatemala City. This was nice! Actually had business class tickets for much cheaper than the economy! Very nice. Real food on real plates! Also all the times I have walked by these people and they have a drink! Well that was me this time!

The flight was only 1 hour 30 minutes! Not long enough! Then a short wait for the 1 hour van ride to Antigua.

A long day, as was almost 9 pm by the time we got to the hotel.

The city is very nice! All very old, 1600 and on. but it seems that some had been destroyed by earthquakes in the 1700s.

Old cobbled streets every where with buildings made of red brick and plastered over!

Weird having volcanos (inactive) looming all around the sky line!

Spent the morning watching the sting rays play/fish in the waves.

May 4, Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica

Walked to Brazilito Beach today. Only took about 40 minutes! Nice beach, very quiet. Black sand again. Nice coast as there is a small island just off the beach. Some people swam over to it!

I stuck to the beach!

May 3, Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica

Walked 4 km into town along the beach. Interesting as it is just next to Flamingo, separated by a rocky point but the other beach is more volcanic sand. Fairly black, but very hot to walk on.

Had lunch at little place and walked back.

Then to beach and finish with swim in pool.

May 2, Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica

Went diving at 7.30 to 11.30 today. This is the first time since I received my certification.

Very nice as went for 2 dives of 45 minutes each. Went to Sombrero island (larger type island not far from Flamingo Beach)and the point off Flamingo beach. Not much for coral in the area but there were lots of fish. Many eels, and was even shown my first 'sea slug'. Very small!

Instructor spotted a white sea horse. The first one she has seen in 2 years!

There is some coral starting at the second dive sight, so after a few years it will be very nice!

Beach in afternoon with more sting rays and was able to do more body surfing.

Walked the beach again. Only about 2 km long, but with nice sand!

May 1, Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica

lazy start and then one very expensive breakfast! This is a resort! Damn it was 3 days meals in some other countries, and then some!

Not much today, just off to beach. Very hot here but nice at beach as there were sting rays swimming along shore line and even jumping out of the water.

April 30, Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica

Up for 8 am transfer, which means a van comes to hotel picks you up and delivers you to new place. Could be ore people, but this time, just the 2 of us.

Arrived at 11 am and even got checked in. Lunch and then to beach in afternoon, just lazed around.

April 29, La Fortuna (near Arenal Volcano), Costa Rica

Up early even though did not have to get up! Not good!

But out for coffee and breakfast.

Did not do much today, went for a short walk around town, bank, and even a bit of shopping.

Nice swim in the pool and then out for dinner.

April 28, La Fortuna (near Arenal Volcano), Costa Rica

Off and running at 7..15 am! Very early, but at least had a chance to have breakfast!

First to Hanging Bridges. Several bridges the cross valleys with some in the canopy of the rain forest. Very neat! Saw a viper, red frog and a couple of birds nests as well as a tarantula.

Then to La Fortuna Waterfall. Walked down several steps, they said 400 to this nice waterfall. Could not swim under the waterfall but were able to get in a small pool downstream. Very cool but refreshing. Interesting as many fish swimming in the pool, could have been trout!

Lunch at same place as yesterday and then off to do the Volcano hike. This hike was through some sugar cane that had to be 15 feet high. Then on to the lave flow from the 1992 eruption. This flow was more rocky than lava but still interesting. Rocks/lava was fairly light, not what I expected.

Then off to the Tabacon Hot Spring. Huge place with 19 different pools. Some of them fairly natural and some regular pools. All very nice. A real maze of pathways to the various pools and spent a lot of time trying to find my way back! Water felt great and the setting was very nice. Rain forest type trees every where, sometimes so thick you could not see the sky!

Finally got home at 9.30 pm. Long day, very tired, but nice to get out and do some walking and get some exercise while seeing some sights!

April 27, La Fortuna (near Arenal Volcano), Costa Rica

Up very early to catch the shuttle bus to La Fortuna. Left hotel at 7.30 am but nice as arrived at new hotel at about 11.30 am. Room not even ready. Trip did not even seem that long as ended up traveling with 3 girls from New Jersey that have just finished medical school and traveling in Costa Rica and one from Barcelona. Very interesting to talk to them. Cancer, cardiology and emergency medicine will be their specialties.

Then spent the afternoon walking around and checking out tours and making travel arrangements. Finally done, and hopefully have not confused the dates! Confusing trying to deal with this weekend travel and then trying to arrange travel to Guatemala City next week as well!

April 26, San Jose, Costa Rica

Easy day. Went off and wandered around the city area again. Like a different city with people on the streets and the shutters of stores open! Surprises at each one as I had no idea what was behind the shutters! Bar and restaurant across the street! And many shops along the pedestrian mall.

Went to the Museum of Gold. Just ok, for the price. Fairly expensive. Did show some of the history of the currency in Costa Rica. The most interesting part was that many of the plantation created their own currency in order to pay the workers. These could then be used to purchase goods they needed! Was late 1800 or early 1900s that a common country currency was established.

Then just spent the rest of the day walking the mall, sitting in park! Met an American that lives in San Jose. Interesting chatting with him. Ex army and has retired here.

Finds it cheap to live.

April 25, San Jose, Costa Rica

Another 8 am boat tour and then a 1 hour walk through part of the National park that parallels the beach.

Similar animals but this time we did see baby caimans! Mother close by with babies sunning themselves on a log! Still a very interesting boat ride.

On the walk we saw some spiders and ants, but also some howler monkeys! Looked like they were sleeping in the very tops of the trees above us. Apparently you are not supposed to stand underneath them as they will drop things on you but also you are supposed to keep you mouth closed, for the same reason that you never look up when birds are flying over head! No problems!

The lodge is quite nice. All four walls this time, but no windows on 2 sides! They are screened this time. Nice balcony with 2 rocking chairs out front. Very neat to sit there and watch monkeys in the trees! All cabins are on stilts as are the walkways. It does flood in the rainy season. Just at the end of the dry season now. Weather was great, only a bit of rain one night!

April 24, Tortuguero (means Turtle home) National Park, Costa Rica

Off on boat tour of canals at 8 am for a couple of hours!

Saw white faced monkeys, spider moneys, caiman, many types of heron (blue, tiger), Jesus lizard (walks on water), iquana, other small lizard.

Very interested trip!

Had the rest of day to ourselves so went for a walk on the 2km trail and did a short kayak trip.

Then relaxed by the pool, tried to sleep but could not.

Hilarious as a bunch of white faced monkeys showed up in the trees near the pool and everyone was out with their cameras. Not sure which group was putting on the best show!

April 23, Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica

Very early start! In van by about 6 am! and on the road.

Mostly pavement but the last 1 1/2 hours was big stones!

Drove through the mountain pass, very lush and green.

Stopped for breakfast and we could actually see the smoke rising from a volcano that became active about 3 years ago!

Along the way stopped at banana packing house. This was Del Monte but Chiquita is just down the road. They also have their own airport and airstrip!

Both huge operations. The bunches of bananas are wrapped in plastic and hauled to the plant by a system of overhead tracks, pulled by a man! He pulls several, maybe 15 to 20.

Also saw a 2 toes sloth and a red frog. The frog's sweat is poisonous.

Then got a 11/2 hour boat ride. Many birds along the way. Very nice.

Arrived about 1 pm, and long trip. Went into have lunch. Full hot buffet, that was pretty good.

Went on tour of the turtle beach and a short walk through the main town of Tortuguero. Mostly hostels, guest houses and restaurant. And these are open, even with Easter!

Then back to hotel. The hotel is on a sand bar that has been overgrown with trees and vines. Interesting as there are many inland waterways.

Had dinner and then at 9 pm headed out on tour to see turtle lay her eggs. We were not lucky. Saw a couple of sets of tracks coming out of the water but they turned around and headed back in.

Very dark! And to think we paid to walk along beach at night for about 3 hours! Disappointed we did not see anything. According to the guide one did land but at 4 am! Strange as it would be getting light! when she finished (takes about 2 hours to lay 500 eggs).

Very tired and sandy when got back to the hotel.

Bocas del Toro and into Costa Rica 2011

Streets are abandoned! Stores and shops closed.

Went walking around and not much open at all!

Found a restaurant and then walked around the sights! Theatre, Cathedral, museum and souvenir market (called artesian market). And even only a few of them open!

More processions today. Watched a couple of the stops along the streets. At least there are lots of people at these.

Also arranged for a tour.

April 21, San Jose, Costa Rica

Easy morning. Afternoon flight.

Went for lunch on water, and then to airport. Funny as the airport is about 3 blocks from the main street.

The flight took about 50 minutes, in a twin turbo prop Otter! Seated about 20 people on bench type seats. The co-pilot gave the take off instructions. Scramble seating so I ended up in front seat right behind the pilot. No door so was able to watch the instruments as we flew. Ask the co-pilot when we landed if he really said it was an Otter, he replied very proudly yes, and that they are perfect for Costa Rica, short flights, and short runways.

Arrived at Hotel Santo Tomas. Great place in an old house but with a swimming pool. Ceilings must be 12 feet, wood floors and tiled hallways. Looks great!

As it is Good Friday, almost everything is closed! There were a few fast food places open. Found a small food court.

As the country is strong Catholic, they were also having a procession down the street and also putting the Easter story! Used several stages.

April 20, Bocas del Toro, Panama

Lazy start to the day! So nice to sit on balcony and listen to the waves!

Finally got moving and caught the bus to Bocas del Drago, a small place on the north end of the island. Was standing on the side of road waiting for the bus when the bus came by, asked me where I was going and said that I had to go into town. About 1 hour later I arrived. Is really only a 30 minute ride. But had to wait at the main square then tour around to the school, pick up a bunch of school kids and then back to square. Then finally got going. Not sure why I had to go into town as the bus stopped along the way anyway! But I guess I did get a seat!

Bocas del Drago has a few little guest houses and 2 or 3 restaurants. I just walked along the beach towards the Starfish beach. Along the way spotted a sting ray swimming along the edge of the water. Only about 1 foot across but still good to see. He was there when I went back as well!

Saw a few starfish. Just along the edge of the water. Brightly coloured. Walked as far as I could go along the beach and turned back. There were 3 or 4 tour boats parked along the beach, but the best part was the guy selling beers, cold! $2!!!!!

Caught the bus back and then went for another swim at the beach. Dirty compared to the other beaches with some kind of sea weed in the water. Come out of water a bit green!

Relaxed for rest of evening, as off to San Jose, Costa Rica tomorrow!

April 19, Bocas del Toro, Panama

Off on boat tour today. Only 5 on the tour.

A late start, so I guess manana, is in full force here!

After about a 15/20 minute boat ride, stopped in Dolphin Bay with about 15 other boats. We saw many dolphins, which is good as I guess the day before the people saw 3!

Then off to Coral Cay. Ordered lunch, and then went for a snorkel. Went just off the dock a few yards. Many fish just swimming around and a fair bit of coral. Very nice. Water nice as well.

Then off to Zapatilla Island National Park. Beautiful beaches all the way around the island. Coral just off the beach, but water was fairly shallow. Good snorkeling, and not much for current or waves. Took a walk around the island that took only about 30 minutes. Maybe 50 people on the whole island.

Couple of hours here and then back to Coral Cay for lunch. Interesting way to do it, but I guess that way they only buy and cook what is needed.

Mixed seafood with coconut curry sauce. Very good

On way back to Island Colon, stopped at a bouy in the middle of a bay somewhere. Beautiful multicoloured coral here! Amazing. Blue, purple, red, orange, green. Very nice.

Got back to town about 4 pm after a 10 am start. Great day.

Bought some groceries to have for dinner, sandwiches as still full from lunch.

Lazed around apartment for most of day, then mid afternoon went down to beach for a swim. Water was warm and shallow. Small waves. Felt great.

Walked into town and had dinner at the same restaurant that I had lunch at. Very nice with all the lights on across the water at the other island.

April 17, Bocas del Toro, Panama

Up shortly after 5 am to make sure I get to the airport by 6.30 for a 7.30 flight.

Tough going without having coffee first thing!

Not too many people on street at this time of morning, but there were a few taxis! First one wanted $5, but the night clerk had guessed $2. Passed him by and the next guy said $3. About a 15 minute drive. Hard to believe that he would take so little when gas is about $4 per gallon (I think it is in gallons).

Arrived at airport, got checked in in not time. Had my coffee.

The flight was only about 45 minutes. Actually flew over the Miraflores locks! A bit hazy but still a good view.

The airport is very small, so did not take long to get luggage and into taxi.

For $1 taxi to apartment that we rented. Nice as it over looks the beach on the other side of the road. But can still hear the waves. Beach looks nice, but not much when tide is in as there is al lot of mangrove trees along the shoreline.

Poured rain for about 2 hours in morning. Stopped but stayed cloudy for the afternoon.

Took a walk into the main town area. Took about 30 minutes. A few people around. Many restaurants that are on stilts over the water. Very nice. Surprisingly the water under the restaurants is clear, even considering that there were some soap suds looking stuff floating by once in a while.

Took it easy in the evening.

Another lazy day. Did some walking around the area of the hotel. Did some shopping, but only bought a shirt.

Walked along the shore again today!

Went back to the old town and visited the Canal Museum. Great museum, covered must of the history of Panama as well as the history and building of the canal.

The museum is in an old hotel. Amazing building.

Fortunately I was inside as it poured rain!

Off to walk the streets again today.

Stopped in and had my hair cut. No English, but my hair not that hard to figure out. This one cost me $3, but no fancy stuff. Just the basic cut! I think she was a bitt shocked when I got her to cut my hair very short. Oh well. Feels better.

Finally found the bar street in the downtown area! Seems that each map has different names of streets on them, this with not very many street signs, makes it difficult to find anything.

The street was very quiet, with most places not even open. It was mid afternoon!

Today I had to be the guide. A lady from Seattle asked me where the big mall was. I was headed that way so showed her where it was. Turn out she is here for 3 weeks, taking Spanish lessons and using this as a trial basis for retiring here.

Walked back to hotel. I think I must have walked for about 5 hours today!

Walked around in downtown area! Wow, such a difference between this area and the old city.

High rises that have to be 50 or 60 stories high, and many of them just being worked on!

Lots of shops, with big sales! I may even have to have a look, but I will leave that for another day.

Ended up getting a quick tour of the many restaurants. Robert, with relatives in Toronto, gave me the tour. Then of course, hit me up for money! He got a dollar. Seems most are guides around here.

April 12, Panama City, Panama

Slow start again, this is nice.

Caught a taxi to the Causeway area. This is 3 islands joined by a road made from the rock removed from the canal. Works as a breakwater to the entry to the canal as well.

Had lunch at one of the marinas. Many nice boats, motorized. Very quiet place.

Walk along the roadway, and then stopped at a Smithsonian Research centre. Part of one the islands set aside with many displays. Turtles, sharks, eels, starfish and the list goes on.

Even saw an iguana climb up a tree. Seemed big at about 4 foot long, including tail!

Caught a taxi back to hotel. Went by the location for a big concert tonight. Apparently Shakira is part of a Latin American set.

Slow relaxing start to day! So Nice!

Went for a walk around the block this morning! Definitely not a tourist area! Sidewalks haver doorways into stores/shops, but the curb side is enclosed with permanent kiosks selling just about everything you can imagine! Fruits, vegetables, watches, belts, clothes, shoes, phones and the list goes on and on!

Great to watch the street when you can! The public buses are old school buses, decked out with great colourful paint jobs, and straight pipe mufflers going up the back of the bus. Very noisy as well!

Tried to find the bus station to the Canal, but could not find, so ended up in a taxi!

Great day just watching the boats go through the locks! They get through fairly fast as well! Less than 30 minutes. Spent much more time there than I thought! The area is well laid out for watching, with a running commentary (live) and 3 floors of displays and a short video!

Also got warned 2 times today about how dangerous some of the areas are! This hotel is very close to one of the areas! So have to be careful! Have not had any problems, but then not out wandering the streets late at night!

April 10, Panama City, Panama

Awake very early. Headed out to find coffee!

While just outside hotel, met one of the 'locals'. She was cursing out the police across the street! Said they were killing cats and dogs and that should be gased, the police that is!

Then off for coffee, and met Frank! He is a taxi driver and is looking for clients!

Found the restaurant and met Freedom! He is a poet and has at least 20 other jobs - car wash, parker, body guard, best friend, guide etc.

Apparently many people in New York know him! A real character! He also is officially licensed to accept donations! I could not resist!!! Especially after he recited a poem!

This was in the first hour of being on the street!

The rest of the day was very boring compared to this!

Spent the morning trying to work out accommodation for the Easter weekend. All very busy! No luck yet!

And then walked around the old city! Amazing buildings! Old colonial type! Many in disrepair, but they have restored many, and many in the process, and the country is doing a great job of fixing up the area!

Many churches, a few squares, some street musicians and handicraft sellers! Nice way to spend the afternoon

There was even a slow pitch game going on on the beach, it was low tide!

Then walked to the new section of the city! All high rises, new or just being built! Such a contrast!

Walked along the water all the way. Very nice except got caught in a rain pouring (vs shower), but had jackets and founds some shelfter with many others!

A good day!

Leisurely start, taxi at 9.30 for 12.15 flight!

Arrived very early, and not necessary as the airport in Rio is actually not that big!

After 7 1/2 hours on plan arrived in Panama. Not really that comfortable and did not think that I would ever say that the buses in South America were more comfortable!

Ended up in last row and seats do not recline!

Oh well arrived and got to hotel. It is hot and humid!

Hotel in older part of town, not a great first impression, but after next day, it does grow on you!

Did not do much today, very relaxing!

Went and spent the day at Ipenema Beach. Great place, very busy, nice fine clean sand. Wave fairly large but not too bad!

Best part is guys coming around with beers! $2!!!!! Life is good.......

Out for final dinner, and caiprihna, as last night in Brazil!

April 7, Rio de Janerio, Brazil

Got on a tour to Fevala Rochina. This is a town that started with people just building houses on vacant land! Very interesting. Not much for roads, but many sidewalks worming through the various houses! Actually just a suburb! Close to areas that people worked, cheap rent, and usually no taxes and free electricity! They just tap into the lines! There are stores, and now the government is stepping in and building hospitals, roads and daycares! Then tax the people! Many are run by gangs! The one we visited is just being fixed up by the government, but a gang still runs part of it!

This was the last thing done withe group! We are no fending for ourselves!

Then after a 5 minute stop, dropped at another hotel, picked up for the city tour. Started with a drive up to Christ the Redeemer, the large statue over looking the city of Rio!

But had to change to another bus that took us to the top! Many hairpin curves to get there!

Great views over the city!

Next stop was at the short street area where the Carnaval floats are judged. Street not that wide, but the seating and judge booths are large!

Then to Lapa, the steps that are tiled with tiles from all over the world. Interesting.

Dumped the tour here as they were heading to Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Walked over the the Cathedral. Seats 8000 people. Strange looking church, as it is built as a cone! Huge!

Caught the Metro to Ipenema Beach where we watched the sunset and had hamburgers on the beach! Very nice.

Caught the bus back to the hotel, but could have walked just as fast as the traffic is crazy! 2 streets with 3 or 4 lanes each, all feeding into 1 lane!

Sao Paulo, Paraty and Rio Brazil, 2011

April 6, Rio de Janerio, Brazil

Up early on on the bus, again! Just over a 4 hour ride to Rio. Got settled then most of us caught the local bus to Sugar Loaf Mountain. The ride was wild! No shocks on bus and a rough road. Not a good combination, and of course we sat at the back of the bus, just to get the better ride!

Arrived and up we go! 2 sets of cable cars to get you to the top! Very busy place as it is the place to be to see the sunset! Was great! People actually clapped their hands when the sun set!

Then off to Cocacabana Beach for dinner and drinks! Celebrating another birthday! There were 3 on this trip! Great time. Our last meal together as a group!

Tough start to trip but turned out to be very good!

April 5, Paraty, Brazil

Spent part of the morning and the afternoon on a boat trip. Traveled to about 3 different islands.

Able to do some snorkeling and swimming but the water was not that clear. There was a turtle poking his head out of the water in the first bay, but did not see him under the water!

Got a bit of sun, but then just before the last stop, it started to pour rain! Just as it has each afternoon here!

Even though it was raining some of us dived into the water for a swim. Water was pouring off my head, and that was from the rain.

Got back into the town, and many of the streets had been flooded, but not by the rain but by the tide!

For some reason they built this city 300 years ago, and the streets flood with the tides. Apparently it is only with full moon, but we are in middle of full moons! Not sure why they have not built up the city to avoid this, but instead they have holes in walls to allow the water to flow in and out! On some street, they also have bridges over the road and water!

April 4, Paraty, Brazil

Early start, out of hotel by 7 am and on the bus at 8. Arrived at Paraty at about 2.30 pm. Long bus ride again but drove through mountains that are mostly covered in forest/jungle! Very lush!

Hit the coast and actually saw a South Atlantic beach. Looks very nice. Beaches at in small bays along the coast. Most of the coast is very rocky, with the mountains running right up to the water.

Took a short walk around the city. Apparently the some streets will flood with high tides and there is a lot of water in the streets. The streets are cobble stoned. Rocks and not the easiest to walk on. Walked to the harbour and then back along the main street. Most of the buildings in the old town are very well looked after with colourful doors. The city was founded in 1660, and looks like the streets are just as they were. Interest as I did see some electrical lines running out of buildings, some of them buried in between the rocks but some look like they have been buried under. I can not imagine how much work that would be.

April 3, Sao Paulo, Brazil

Very noisy street! Partied most of the night I think and room is over the street!

Relaxing morning but still on the road (or sidewalk) about 10.30 am. Walked through the Republic park and down a huge shopping pedestrian mall. Most stores closed!

Went to the large Cathedral. Apparently it can hold up to 8000 people! It was huge!

Then walked to a large park. Took about 1 hour to get there, but still a great walk. In a fairly rich area with many doctors' offices, including what looked like plastic surgeons.

Park was very nice with good sized lakes and lots of people. Had lunch and then walking more. Started to rain, so stopped under a shelter with most others, actually was pouring.

Ended up soaking wet, so caught a cab back to the hotel.

Out for dinner to a buffet, again. You have to like a place that serves you endless amount of beef and chicken. This time we were also offered ox. Tried but found it very tough!

April 2, Sao Paulo, Brazil

In taxis, as this is how we are transported to and from the bus terminal, and off on bus for Sao Paulo at 9 am. The ride took about 6 1/2 hours. Nice ride, comfortable. Seemed to go over a mountain range that was dense forest/jungle.

Ended up in a nice hotel in centre of city. Will go out exploring a bit later and tomorrow.

Poured rain with lots of wind and even some thunder!

Headed out for something to eat, and after looking at several places, got shown one buffet! We were not really looking for a buffet, always eat too much, and this was reals 22 ($15), but with all the hesitation he dropped the price to reals 15 ($10)!!! Can not beat a bargin! It was pretty good!

Brazil 2011

April 1, Curituba, Brazil

Arrived at bus station at 5.30 am! Got some sleep, enough to keep me going for a bit anyway.

Amazingly able to check into room, so got cleaned up and off for breakfast.

Then to post office, to finally get some things mailed off! That is a relief.

Then took off walking. Most of the others took the hop on hop off bus, but a couple of us decided to walk around.

Headed off to Tourist information for map. Just outside there was a comedy being performed. Want I can gather is that it is part of the fringe festival. The play was all in Spanish, but still very good!

Saw many Theatres, about 4 in the same block! All looked very nice. Went inside the main one! Very modern.

Wandered through a museum of Joao Turin, a sculptor that has done many bronze statutes. Found that out from the book in side the museum. Interesting.

Then kept walking around. Wandered through a large park, which also had birds in large cages, and then into a demonstration. From what we were told, some people were beaten by a cop. Only a few people in march, but they had a police escort and they were blocking traffic.

Went to the 24 hour street where apparently everything stays open all the time, but seemed to be closed for construction! Not sure.

Brazil 2011

March 31, on the night bus

Up and off to cross border into Brazil. Not busy so did not take that long, which is nice. One guy had received his visa in November last year, and had not entered the country, but after a long delay they let him in. Good thing! Not sure what the rules are now, whether it is 30, 60 or 90 days from date of issue!!!!

First stop was at airport to take a helicopter ride over falls, amazing! 10 minutes in air for $100 US, but well worth it! Great views, and loud, but that was the girls screaming!

Then into a bird park, but also had caymans and boa constrictors!

Then to visit to Brazilian side of Falls. Brazil has only a small portion of all the falls, part of the Devil's throat, but the views are panoramic of all the falls! Very nice.

The walks were very short but everyone seemed to be tired.

Then out for dinner to a local buffet! Brazilian realis $17.00, about $12, and all you can eat! The amazing part is that almost no meat on the buffet. They came around with huge skewers of meat and would slice off pieces on your plate! Hot off the coals! Very good. Except they kept coming around and coming around. Many different cuts of beef, and then the chicken and pork!

Then off to bus station for the night bus at 9.00 pm. The last one! (for this tour at least!)

Argentina and into Brazil 2011

March 30, Iguazu Falls, Argentina

Took a short ride to Iquazu National park. About 2 kms along a metal grated walk way to visit to Devils Throat. Many people on the walkway, but by the time I got to the end it poured rain. Actually a blessing as it cleared most of the people out and I used my water proof camera case, so only one taking photos. Blurred a bit, bit still ok.

Then walked trails, the upper and lower trails, about 1 hour each. Great as some of the trails are across the tops of some of the many falls in the area. Unfortunately an accident on river last week where 2 people died in boating accident, caused the shut down the boat rides under the falls.

Beautiful day in end with sun shining.

Went to Dinner show - singing and dancing - was ok, but is a musical type thing!

March 29, San Ignacio, Argentina

8.30 depart for a 2 hour bus ride in pouring rain. Caught a taxi to estancia. The water was flooding the streets!

Taxi could not make up hill, too slippery roads, so had to back down and go around a different road. The road is red, and a good thing it appears to be covered in loose rocks, otherwise we would have slid around everywhere. The ground is a lot of clay!

Had a super lunch, 3 or 4 courses of just meat, I lost track but other things as well. Including small buns made from cassava flour! Tasty!

Then took 1 1/2 hour horse ride around 650 hectare ranch, with 480 head of cattle. Some of the grass is 6 feet tall! The grass is actually grown under pine trees which are cut every 17 to 18 years. Another cash crop. They also grow cassava in between some of the rows of trees.

Then back into taxi, it had stopped raining while we were riding, and 2 hour bus ride to Puerto Iguazu. We arrived about 8 pm.

out for beers and to bed. Exhausting day. May modes of transport and covered a lot of ground.

Uruguay into Argentina (again) 2011

March 28, San Ignacio, Argentina

Arrived and settled by about 10.30. Got a far bit of sleep! Scary that I have adjusted to these overnight trips! Maybe good as there is another on to come in a couple of days!

Spent part of afternoon wandering around the San Ignacio Jesuit church town site. Built here in 1696, but founded in 1610 in Brazil and moved here. Huge complex for about 4500 people.

The site was restored in 1940. Nice place and good to wander around.

Then went for hike in jungle/rain forest. 2 hour walk after a bone jarring ride on a wood bench in the back of a jeep with no shocks, over rough dirt/rocky roads! The walk was nice with a look out over the river Parana, which eventually makes its way to the Amazon River!

Also went to the house site of Boorman, the exiled Nazi concentration camp leader. That was a bit of a surprise. Apparently there were also some research in the area for nuclear use. Not sure about that though. But they did build a fort/look out for protection.

Then went to see several sculptures that relate to the local native (Guanaco ???) myths and beliefs. On the way back actually spotted a tarantula. Still just a as scary as the one in Peru!

Did not see much for wildlife. Few birds, couple of butterflies.

Then at night went to the sound and light show at the ruins. This was very well done with 3D and 2D projections. Told a story about the sight using 1 guy and what his life may have been like. Very interesting.

Dinner and to bed, very tired!

March 27, Over night bus to San Ignacio, Argentina

Back again, and I have lost track how many times we have entered Argentina!

Relaxing morning of a great breakfast!

Then caught a local bus to the Dayman Hot springs!

So nice to relax in hot springs, and soak up a bit of sun. Several different pools and lots of grassy areas. They also had different showers with multiple sprays.

Caught the bus back to city centre and went for a good coffee! Dinner and then waiting for taxi to border back into Argentina and then the overnight bus.

Left at 11.30 pm and arrived at Posadas, at 8 am, where changed to another bus for 1 hour ride.

Argentina to Uruguay 2011

March 26, Salto, Uruguay

Bus tour in morning around Montevideo. Around the city centre and by the port. This out to the suburbs. By several very nice homes where all the rich people live. House for about $300,000.

Stopped a the large local park that was donated by one of the former residence. There are many bronze statues all over the city!

Then a 6 hour bus ride to Salto. Not too bad, as bus was very comfortable. Mostly an agricultural area. Many cattle and sorgum fields. The area looks fairly prosperous, and according to some reading it is! Arrived about 6, checked in and then went for dinner and then short walk down the street and along the river. Did enjoy some more wine tonight, A San Juan cabernet sauv. Very good!

And then to bed!

March 25, Montevideo, Uruguay

Walked around Colonia in morning. Great little town with a lot of Spanish and Portuguese influence. Visited the old city wall, lighthouse and some other buildings.

The city is full of very old vehicles. Some that still run and some that do not appear to have moved in a long time! Still very interesting.

Then 3 hour bus ride to Montevideo, the Capital city of Uruguay. The population of the country is about 3.5 million, and 1.5 million in this city. The hostel here is somewhat better, but not much. They at least have a bar, with cheap drinks that they free pour the booze! Went out for expensive dinner, $40, salmon with shrimp sauce and huge glass of red wine, tannat is the favoured grape! Very good.

March 24, Colonia de Sacramento, Uruguay

Lazy morning, left on boat to Uruguay. Nice ride, but unable to get outside to watch. The river is very muddy looking with lots of wind and waves.

Turns out there was a huge screw up in reservations so ended up separated in 2 awful hostels, not a great way to start a tour! By the time this got sorted out and we had dinner it was very late!

March 23, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Did not do much. Sorted out some things to mail home. Did get my flights home changed. Fly back on July 4, I could not get a flight as they were booked up for almost a week earlier! Oh well, that is ok!

Did some research on Central America, specifically Panama and Costa Rica.

Had a short meeting with the new tour group, as that tour started today. Then out for dinner at a traditional Argentinian BBQ restaurant! Huge place. $25 for 1/2 litre of wine, huge tenderloin steak and potatoes! The steak was great!

Argentina 2011

March 22, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Travel day today. Heard the airport in Buenos Aires was closed yesterday as the traffic control was down, but we made it ok! Nice as a direct flight of only 3 1/2 hours. Staying in hostel for 2 nights. A very busy place and at times loud. But the location is super as it is on the main pedestrian mall.

Went out for dinner at a London Pub with a couple from the Ushuaia tour. London Pub was not very Londonish! But the food was great!

March 21, Ushuaia, Argentina

Caught a van out to the Tierra del Fuego National park. Here we caught the local tourist train to take us right into the park. Then started a walk of about 12 km. Very nice walking in a forest and along the coast. Very different than Torres, as this is more forested and close to the beach. Stopped for lunch on rocky point. Sitting there and a carcara joined us. Looking for handouts, but did not get any! Beautiful day until waiting for the ride back and it poured rain. A different company picked us up and delivered us to the right company van as it approached. Nice, but still got a bit wet. By the time we got back into town the sun was shining and the streets were dry!

Out for a farewell dinner. All you can eat at a 'meat' place! This is the type of restaurant that cooks the meat on a charcoal fire and also has the whole lambs on a spit! So good! Lots of fun!

March 20, Ushuaia, Argentina

Up and off on Beagle Channel cruise. Used a catarmaran with 2 engines. The boat was almost full. Headed out into the channel and stopped at a small island for a short walk. A reserve area but they ran the boat up on the beach and dropped the gangway. Nice views of city from island. Then to an island that is full of sea elephants. Very smelly and loud! Then to a colony of cormorants, and again very smelly. Was surprised at how close they got to the islands with the boats.

In the afternoon headed off to the Naval/ Prison museum. Built in about 1902, for prisoners shipped here, manly to inhabit the area as a claim to the area. Huge prison with about 5 different hallways coming out of a central area, like a wheel. 2 of the halls had many displays about some of the prisoners, one was 16. Then one of the halls had not been developed. I could not survive as it was just too cold!

Short walk along harbour and back to hotel.

Off for dinner and then to Irish pub for drinks. Always fun!

Chile 2011

12 hour bus ride today starting at 7 am! And back in Argentina again! Short stop at abandoned sheep station.

Crossed the Magellan straight on a local ferry. Only took about 30 minutes. Not that big of a ferry, 2 buses and maybe 4 semi trailers.

The current and wind were quite strong going across.

Nice lazy start to the day!

Headed off and walked along the beach area. The boardwalk is very nice with tributes to Magellan but the beach has a lot of garbage on it! Too bad as they have done a great job on the walk way. Even the pedestrian bridge is boat shaped!

Then turned toward the city. Not to bad as the streets are laid out on the grid, but is confusing as the beach curves around, so some very strange intersections.

Some of the houses are very small, and some are very brightly painted.

Walked by the catherdral and around the market stalls in the main square! Very nice place with the Magellan statue in the middle. The stalls are all the same, small wagons.

The buildings are very well done in the city centre! Late 1900s mostly.

Stopped at a small cafe for some real coffee! Way too much nescafe, even this morning!

Then headed off to the Braun Mendoza mansion. This is a late 1800s rich sheep ranchers house that has been turned into a museum. Beautiful house! 2 full stories with the main living areas on the main floor and I assume the bedrooms upstairs (could not go up).

Then headed off to the naval museum. Great video shown by a sailor in 1929 sailing from Germany around the horn. Also many navy/naval displays. A little bit on Shackleton but not really much.

Rained a little bit, so headed back to hotel for a nap, but did not fall asleep! Too much sleep last night I guess!

Went out to the casino bar which is on the 11th floor. Great views, even from the toilet!

March 17, Punta Arenas, Chile

Up at 7 am as have to have breakfast and pack up the camp. Did not take long. Couple of hours and all the tents were down, including the cook tent.

On the road by 10 am and into Puerto Natales by 12 to drop up some camp gear and have lunch! Went to a small cafe and had 2 cups of REAL coffee! I could not drink the nescafe this morning.

About a 3 hour drive along more gravel roads we arrived at the Mellagan penguin colony! Only a few around, some of them just loosing their last baby feathers. Very cute, just standing there in the wind and cold! Neat as saw one peeking out of the burrow!

Had about 1 hour before we headed out for dinner. Went to a restaurant around the corner. I had salmon and mashed potatoes. $20 and that includes 2 huge pieces of salmon and a beer! Very good.

Beat so headed back to hotel.

March 16, Torres del Paine National Park, near Puerto Natales, Chile

Another sleep in! So nice.

Got a ride from Peggy to the dock where we boarded a catamaran to cross Lago Pehoe.

Peggy is a 480 hp twin turbo diesel 'truck'. Really a container truck with seats installed. Actually does not ride too bad, even on the many miles of washboard gravel roads!

Today only a 15 km hike up the Francis valley to a lookout over a river and many smaller glaciers. The hike took about 4 1/2 hours. Sore muscles and all!

The wind was howling! Actually blew me off the trail a couple of time.

Also when we had to cross a suspension bridge the wind had the bridges swaying on its own with out anyone on it! Apparently the wind was not too strong today!

A very interesting walk. Went by a lake where the wind was whipping up the water and blowing it on land, a very green valley, and through a couple of forested areas. Disappointed as the wind was so strong, we did not even see many birds!

Got back to the dock and went to the bar! Pisco sours, 2 for 1 2,500 pesos ($5). Great way to finish the walking for this stay. Muscles still very sore!

March 15, Torres del Paine National Park, near Puerto Natales, Chile

Not sure what happened but actually slept in until about 8 am! wow!

Also I have some very sore and stiff muscles! Ouch!

Took a short 2 km walk down the road to see the Salto Chico (small water fall).

Then got a ride in Peggy (the big yellow truck, not a bus) to the Salto Grande (large water fall) Very nice as well.

Then another guy and I decided to walk to another look out (Mirador Cuerrios) On the way there we walked through a flock of guanacos! Very impressive. We did not move and they walked between us. This walk was only about 1 hour, and gave us a very good view of the towers and the Horns! Catch was we had to walk back to the camp while the others got a ride!

This day was only about 16 km walk! Mostly flat but there were some hills, but still very much easier than yesterday.

I had hoped it would work out the stiffness, but I think I am just stiffer!

Tonight borrowed a blanket from the 'truck' (as we are supposed to call Peggy, according to the driver) as I nearly froze last night.

But tonight the cook made some mulled wine! mmmmm very good and also I am sure it provided enough warmth for the whole night!

March 14, Torres del Paine National Park, near Puerto Natales, Chile

Off at a very early start at 6.30 am! Crazy!!!!

But only had a 2 hour drive to the Park. Not too bad. But along the way saw many guanaco an rheas (related to the emu). Interesting that there are so many guanaco as they were at one point considered on the verge of extinction! There were many rheas as well in flocks. Great to see

Arrived at the park and were dropped off to catch a van. This van would take us to the start of the Torres (tower) hike. But the van had to cross a bridge that only had about 1 inch to spare on either side! The sides of the van showed that someone had had some closer than wanted encoutnters with the side of the bridge.

The hike to the look out for the 3 granite towers took about 3 hours, one way! Much of it up, and a lot of it fairly steep! And no was not not up both ways! Tried to stay with the group but they are power hikers so just gave up! But when they stopped for breaks I would catch up with them.

The tallest tower, the left one from the view point, is 2850 meters. The view was great with the glacier and the small lake at the base of the towers.

Part of the hike took us across a few rock slides! I am sure that we would not be able to do that in North America!

This was the first night of camping in the Pehoe camp ground! Actually nice having a camp fire, it has been a while. Even better as the crew had set up the tents while we were away!

Great meal, as there is a now a cook with us! More 5 star camping.

Rented a sleeping bag at $10/night. 3 times the price of the Peru one!

Night was cold and exhausted from walk. Probably saved somewhat by the use of the walking sticks I have been carrying! This must be the 3rd use!

March 13, Puerto Natales, Chile

Late start at 10 am and a short drive to border, exit Argentina and enter Chile. Did not take long. Guide telling us that it can take hours.

Then short drive to Puerto Natales so arrived mid afternoon! This is a very small town along the shores of a bay! Not sure but many miles to open ocean.

Spent the day wandering around, shopping for treats for the camping in the National park.

March 12, El Calafate, Argentina

On tour today at 8 am! That means on the bus and moving! Oh nice to be back on tour! NOT!!!!

But it will be good.

The tour headed out of town on gravel roads for about 25 km. Not many cars around! Nice as along the way saw a black breasted buzzard eagle, the local emu and many rabbits.

Stopped for coffee at small place and they had a guanaco as a pet! Actually inside the restaurant! Very cute. They are related to the llama, alpaca and camel.

Then on to Los Glaciers National Park.

Stopped along the road and we went on a short walk down to the Lake Rico. This is the lake that floods with the Perito Moreno Glacier when it hits the land on the opposite side of the lake.

This gave us the first view of the glacier. We are 8 km away and it looks huge! Walked maybe for 1 hour along the lake.

Then onto bus and to the view point over the glacier. Very nice walkways providing many angles to watch the glacier. This glacier advances about 2 m each day so there are many pieces falling off the front and into the lakes. Big splashes and big waves follow loud cracks as the ice falls! Saw a few small ones but apparently did not see the big one. Some of the trails hide the glacier behind trees!

Then onto a boat for a close up view of the glacier. It is huge. About 50 m above the water level. The pictures do not do it justice.
Dinner was with some of the tour group at a roasted lamb restaurant. The lamb is roasted, split, over charcoal. It was very good and was so tender!

March 11, El Calafate, Argentina

Spent the day wandering around the city again.

Hired a taxi and went out to Ceuvas de Walichi, caves which have paintings dated back 4500 years, they think! About 8 km out of town.

Very interesting, similar to Australian aboriginal art and surprising that natural paints can last that long.

Again the guide did not speak much for English but did a great job with sign language and our limited Spanish got the message. The site had also reproduced several paintings located in other areas of the southern part of Chile.

Then walked to the Nimez lagoon, a nature reserve located on the edge of town. Here they are many birds and horses! Horses are not supposed to be there, but they do get in!

Nice walk, but very windy! Saw some geese, carcara, coots, black headed swans, ducks and snipes.

Also went to the Archeological museum. Learned something about dinosaurs but have forgotten it. Not a bad place but way too much information for me to absorb.

Also went to the Glacier Museum. This was great. Interesting displays, movies and even a 3D movie of the glaciers in the area.

Had a very late dinner after a meeting with the tour guides for this part of the trip. Nice couple, Australian and a trainee from Chile.

March 10, El Calafate, Argentina

Up fairly early to get to airport for 9 am flight. 3 hours later we arrived. Flew over many snow capped mountains.

Airport is way out of town so caught a taxi. The land is fairly barren. Short grasses and a few shrubs. The city is not that big at about 8.000, and situated on the lake Argentina.

Spent the afternoon wandering around the main street. Doing some window shopping but also went to the local museum next door to hostel.

The woman did not speak much if any English but she showed us around the small museum. In some places she was using sign language to describe some of the photos, but ended up laughing so hard she would loose her thoughts. Pretty funny!

Sun shone, but temperature still cold at about 12 to 15 degrees. The wind makes is feel fairly cold.

Did not do much, got up, had coffee at small shop around corner from hotel as was too early for breakfast at hotel.

Went to airport and got back to hotel in Buenos Aires about 6 pm.

Out for dinner and then back to hotel as have an early start tomorrow!

March 8, Santiago, Chile

Out of condo and into taxi to bus station. Caught the bus back to Santiago.

Found a hotel, bit old and showing age, but fairly good location and relatively cheap. Cheaper than the 1st place we stopped at.

Off walking around. Took the funicular up the mountain to the Statue of the Virgin Mary. Nice views of city, but the mountains around the city are in a haze. Along the way stopped at street stall and had a 'completo'. Very popular here, places everywhere to buy! It is a hot dog/sausage smothered ( and over flowing with stuff) guacamole, tomatoes, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and many other unidentifiable things! I had the Italiano, with guacamole and tomatoes! Really very good, and for $2, including drink, good deal. Also it is the first time I have seen Canada Dry ginger ale! Nice change.

Walked into the old city and the Armas Square. Lots of great looking buildings around, most from the late 1700 and early 1800.

Walked by the parliament buildings through the square. Very nice, round area, flanked by large flag poles!

Also had a photography display on the street showing the destruction and reconstruction after the earthquake in Feb 2010.

Took forever to find a restaurant with outdoor seating, except for the 'completo' places, but did find one! A grill type place

March 6 & 7, Vina del Mar (near Santiago), Chile

Did not do much at all these days. Took a walk down the beach for a bit, and did a quick tour around the mall. Just like any other mall, but with different stores!

And as usual, pisco sour for happy hour and then wine for dinner.

Great meals! Nice to have home cooked meals.

March 5, Vina del Mar (near Santiago), Chile

Another lazy morning, but did get out to get hair cut! Nothing funny about this cut, just the same old process!

Caught the local bus to Concon, a small resort type place about 30 minutes by local bus. Drove along the coast. Very nice, mostly rocks and cliffs with large condos, hotels, and restaurants along the way.

Went for a late lunch, early dinner at friends favourite restaurant. But catch was had to wait about 1 1/2 hours! Was very good food, but I think the best part was that met people in line and at table next to us. A little bit of English but that did not seem to matter. People very friendly and more than willing to help with food things!

Took a short walk along the beach and the various stalls selling items when got back to Vina del Mar. Saturday night and lots of people just out walking along.

March 4, Vina del Mar (near Santiago), Chile

Very lazy morning, lots of coffee and food. Then early afternoon caught the bus to Valparaiso. Ended up on the scenic tour one that took us up the hill a bit and then back down to the port area. Amazing as the street followed the contours of the cliff around. And houses are built right on the cliff. Many with extensions to back that are supported by stilts! Not sure how they survive the many earthquakes they apparently have here.

Walked along the port area and then caught a tram ride up the cliff and walked around a fairly artsy area. Many colourful houses and some very good graffiti art work.

Stopped at a small B & B and had a Pisco Sour and enjoyed the view over looking the port and the Vina del Mar area.

Subway back and then dinner. It is a tough life as the last couple of nights we have not got up from the dinner table until about 10.30! Very laid back....

March 3, Vina del Mar (near Santiago), Chile

Great place. Over looking the beach! Able to watch the world from the top floor.

Interesting as the building is undergoing major repairs as a result of the large earthquake last year. Looks like a disaster area! But still great as right on the beach!

Interesting as the beach patrol helicopter flew by, and actually were looking down on it!

Took a walk into the city centre. Very pleasant, laid back and relaxed.

Stopped on way back and went to a small restaurant near by. Maybe at most 10 chairs. 2 course meal and glass of wine (very full) for $5! Great food, nice people! Can not beat that!

Got an excellent dinner in condo, into more Pisco sours and of course wine with dinner!

March 2, Vina del Mar (near Santiago), Chile

Lazy day waiting for plane to Santiago at almost 6 pm.

Easy 2 hour flight, and then when leaving airport ran into guy from Peru tour waiting to catch his plane to San Francisco. Great to catch up with him.

We then caught the local bus to Santiago, and that was a short 15/20 minute ride. Then almost immediately onto the bus to Vina del Mar. 1 1/2 hours and we were there. Got off at the bus terminal to an almost empty place! 1taxi! We took and arrived at condo, no problem. Wine and chat until about 2 am. Very late night!

March 1, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Caught the bus to La Boca, another area of the city. Known for its colourful buildings. Apparently the people used old boat paint the brighten up their houses. Looks great, but with the statutes it sure is very touristy. Stopped for a snack and drink and watch a tango demonstration. This is the area where tango was started.

Got back on bus to the next stop, which is where we smelled all the stalls cooking sausages and other beef (?). Had a sausage. Tasted great!

Walked over to the San Telmo area next. Narrow little streets with many antique stores and shopping centres. Streets here are cobble stoned which makes it attractive.

Walked along the street and ended up in San Martin Park, a park at the other side of the main square. Nice park, with good views onto part of the harbour.

Back to hotel for dinner and then out for drink. Watched another tango demonstration on a street corner, and while i was there a woman tried to pick my pocket. Caught her before she got anything, and besides she was in the wrong pocket. Watched her for a bit and turns out she was 1 of 3 working the area. Not a cop in sight. And have not seen many if any since here. Not like Peru where they were everywhere!

Bought a Hop on, Hop off bus pass today and just about killed my butt sitting in a hot hard plastic seat for 2 hours!

Went through some very interesting places. But most of all the buildings are amazing to look at! Great architecture!

Got off at one of the later stops and went to the Recoleta Cemetery. This is where Eva Perron is buried. Very busy place.

Wandered around a little and ended up in a huge tribute to Miguel de Manuel (?), a actor/singer/dancer from the 1950s. Interesting as they were showing some old movies and also had many of his costumes on display!

Wandered over to the metal flower that opens with sunrise and closes with sunset. This is just one of many sculptures around the city!

Beautiful city with wide streets and big boulevards! Many trees and flowers. Squares and circles and statutes all over the place.

Went out for a steak dinner tonight! Very good. Wine(s) and steak for about $20 and then dessert with that! Even got complimentary drinks after dinner. Very nice.

4 hour flight from Lima to Buenos Aires. Arrived about 7 pm, only 1 hour late and took an hour to get through the immigration and customs.

Got to hotel about an hour after that!

Decided to visit the Museum Larco based on guy we met on tour bus last night. A big place and very impressive displays of many artifacts of the Peru. Then headed off to Huaca Huallamarca, which was built about 200 AD. I guess I have changed from rocks to dirt. This is a pile of dirt and mud bricks! Interesting as built is somewhat of a pyramid shape. Bricks seem to be irregular is shape. Then walked through a park full of people and olive trees, on my way to Huaca Pucllana, another pile of dirt, built about 700 AD. These bricks are more regular shaped. All hand formed, except for the restoration parts. Bricks are stacked vertically with gaps inbetween, and occasionally a brick is placed opposite. This is for earthquake proofing. Must work as withstood many earthquakes over the years.

Supposed to have given Inca's the design of triangular to with stand earthquakes, according to the guide.

spent what was left of the day walking. Ended up in the Indian Market and also a huge electronics store, I needed to buy a watch, my $6 Victoria market watch has been making funny noises!

February 25, Lima, Peru

Up and caught a taxi to Larcomar mall to catch tour bus to Fort Felipe Real. This is a 1 hour drive on top of a double decker bus! Great way to see the city but you have to watch out for low hanging trees but also low power lines and banners! A challenge when you are trying to watch the scenery!

After a short look at the port, interesting as the the container dock is very close to the main square at the port, jumped on the bus again for a 2 minute ride to the fort!

The fort also was used as a prison. They were kept in a completely black room, all standing! Not nice.

Had lunch provided at small restaurant close to the harbour. it was very good.

Got dropped off at the mall so stopped for a drink. Spent the rest of afternoon, just walking around.

Nice to be in warm and dry weather! Lima gets very very little rain each year. Measured in millimeters (no I did not make a mistake, very little rain).

February 24, Lima, Peru

Slow start but still out of hotel by about 10 am. Went for a walk along beach for about 3 hours. Walked through some very nice neighbourhoods. This area is the more affluent part of Lima.

To get to the beach you have to go down a huge cliff, guessing about 100 meters. Walk down the road, and hope there is an elevator up! The cliff is made of dirt and rounded river rocks. Very interesting.

The beach has big waves and there are many surfers but not many people in the water swimming. They have also covered the beach with rocks, guessing to protect the sand.

Well no elevator, so found some stairs to go up! Not so bad.

Ended up at the Love Park, and the Kissing statute. Walked along the top of cliff to Larcomar mall. This mall has a huge open area that overlooks the ocean. Very nice even for a mall.

Stopped for coffee for a while and then headed back to hotel. Another very quiet night!

February 23, Lima, Peru

Had a lazy morning, but still up very early.

Had to change hotels this morning. The new hotel is about a 30 minute walk from JFK square. Got settled and then back to the square. Caught the city tour to main square. The buildings in the old part of the city are very nice. Most built in 1600 and 1700 with some much newer. The square is busy with people. Apparently they are getting ready for the festival that starts in a few days. Government house had a band playing, with many people dressed in costumes. Looked great. The tour included a visit to a 'museum', which really turned out to be the main church of the downtown area. Stayed a while but then left and wandered around the square. Walked over the bridge to have a look and then back to square.

Got back to the starting point and decided to catch the night tour. Well it covered most of the same areas but this tour spent more time at the Magic Water show. Many fountains lit up, and one big one with a light and laser show. Very well done. This water park is in Guiness as the largest. Met a young guy on bus that works at a museum who took it upon himself to look after us in the park. He was very nice. Again, he is working on a tourism degree! This tour also had a stop for tea and snack at Sheraton Hotel. Nice, but not sure why.

Back to hotel.

February 22, Lima, Peru

Leisurely start today, left at 8 am. Headed down the trail and suddenly a big crack and a tree fell. Turns out it fell across the stairs on way down to boat! Turned around and went another way to the boat.

By boat for 45 minutes and then to bus for 45 minutes and then off to airport. The plane was about 1 hour late due to rain. It is pouring and has not stopped. The stop in Cusco cancelled due to bad weather, so straight to Lima, One hour late leaving but arrived 1/2 hour earlier than planned. That is a great way to go!

Short walk around and throught JFK park. Very nice, lots of trees, seats and even a small market. Then to dinner and drinks as farewell to the group.

A super group to travel with and will be different not having them around after 3 weeks together, but on to the next adventure.........

February 21, Amazon Jungle, Peru

Up early for walk but pouring rain, so cancelled. Actually the guide later told us that very dangerous to walk while raining as it causes trees to fall! Heard a couple.

Took a short walk to river and then boat ride, another 30 minutes walk to Lake Chimbadas. The is an elbow lake. Boarded a catamaran powered by an oar, around the lake. Saw a family otters fishing, cuckoos, cayman and then fished with stick, line, hook, and raw meat for bait for piranas! Small fish but huge mouths with many teeth!

Returned to lodge, Posada Lodge, one of 3 run by Rainforest Expeditions out of Puerto Maldonado, Peru. This is a great place. We are very well looked after!

Had lunch, excellent as usual, and the a short walk to a look out tower, which overlooks the river and the jungle. 37 meters up! Amazing views. There was a philodendron with about 5 foot leaves, and roots that dropped straight down to jungle floor, 100 feet below!

Then onto boat again for short ride to Shaman's place. This guy and his brother run a 'hospital' for the local people. They also have gardens where they grow many plants they use for healing. He took us on a tour. He showed us antiseptics, sexual impotence cures (para para), cancer, arthritis, stomach cures, and general medicines. The funniest one was a love potion. Guy rubs this potion on his hand, then touches the one he loves. Leaves her for 3 days and then meets her again, and she will be in love with him. Catch is, the potion wears off in 3 months.

February 20, Amazon Jungle, Peru

After a 1 1/2 delay sitting in the airplane, arrived at Puerto Maldanado, 35 minutes later! Apparently a storm was going through and they did not want to take off, but they had made us walk across what seemed like the whole tarmac to the plane, and then they decided to move plane to fill fuel tanks! Not sure what happened.

But arrived ok, and then onto the office to repack bags as only allowed 1 day pack at lodge.

Then got a 45 minute bus ride over dirt roads, complete with many pot holes, of course they were full of water!

Then onto a long boat for the 45 minute ride up the Tombogada River to the lodge. The jungle is so thick and tall!

Welcomed nicely with a drink, and were supposed to go for a walk but it was raining.

Had dinner and the went for a night walk - saw spiders, grasshoppers, many insects and the largest tarantula I have seen! Guide coaxed out of hole! Bigger than a hand!

Actually heard trees falling in forest!

Back to bar for a drink.

They turn the power generator off at about 9, so only candle and kerosene lamp lights!

The room does not have a door, only curtains as does the bathroom. Very nice place, but the best part was no 4th wall! There is a railing but all open to the jungle about 3 meters away. Something else. Can lay in bed and listen to the rain. But does sound like it is pouring but not always as the sound is amplified by the tree leaves!

February 19, Cusco, Peru

Lazy morning just visiting and catching up on pictures and blog.

Went to Sun temple, but it turned out to be more of a church than anything. Apparently the temple was mostly destroyed by Spanish and they build a monastery over top and around it.

Then spent some time wandering around the artistic area and the San Bias church.

The usual evening, dinner and drinks! Great deals, especially with you get to happy hour, anywhere from $4 to $6 for 2 cocktails.

February 18, Cusco, Peru

Up and off to to Machu Piccu. A 30 minute van ride up a mountain for about 1000 meters. Mostly single lane, with hairpin curves. Had a 2 hour tour around the main areas. The temple area, court yards and the housing complex. The stone work is amazing. The tight fitted stones are for the temples and the houses have a looser work. Still something to see considering they did not use anything but stone tools. The mystic of the place is added too by the clouds that are continually rolling through. Shortly after the tour the rain poured!

Went and had coffee and dispite the rain went walking again. Up to the guard house and the sun temple.

Tried to go up the other peak but all the limited number of tickets were gone!

Then caught the train to Ollantaytambo (2 hours), and van back to Cusco (45 minutes).

Dinner at restaurant and then off to Frogs bar for drinks. Home at 12.30 am. Good night and nice to be in bar with live band.

February 17, Machu Piccu, Peru

Up early and off again, but all down hill! But very rocky but still nice.

Walked through a forest with very unusual trees. Apparently these trees are unique to the whole area. They have bark that seems to shred and is very red in colour.

Arrived at pick up point about 2 1/2 hours later.

As has been usual, the tents are set up, cook/dining tent ready as is lunch! Lunch is and has been a 2 course meal. Great soups, and then some excellent main meal. Have eaten a lot of food! All great. This is 5 star camping. Coffee or coca tea delivered to tent each morning, tents set up and taken down. Wash basin set out for each of us. Tough life!

Bus to Ollantaytambo, where had some time for a coffee, and to walk around.

Caught the train to Machu Picchu city, taking about 2 hours. Very slow but the scenery of the valley, river and mountains is great. Lunch/snack served as well. Very impressive.

Checked into hotel and imediately took off to soak in the hot springs. Tough as it was up hill as well! More walking but at least this was stoned walk ways. The hot springs very nice, even with the gravel bottom in the pool. Water not that hot, but still good to soak the muscles.......

Could have used more but they were closing. Off for small dinner and back to hotel. In bed (a real one) by 10.

February 16, Lares Trek, Peru

Woke up early, and when out of tent, the whole area was in the cloud! Very nice, so peaceful and quiet, it must have been all the mist in the air!

Everything wet, but still put the same clothes on. Awake at 6.30 am so lots of sleep, and can feel the legs, but not stiff so that is good!

Off walking again! In the mist and a bit of rain to start with and did not clear until after we had gone through a short sleet/hail storm! Thank god for the poncho! All this and climbing to 4600 meters! This was the highest we were to climb. Slow going but made it. Walked about 6 hours again in total. But this was tough going.

Interesting as I seem to be the only one not really affected by the altitude! The guide said that he has found the smokers do fine, as they are used to a lack of oxygen! Shock! But works for me!

The afternoon was great as almost got completely dry! Shoes still very wet, but with my new alpaca socks, feet are wet but warm!

February 15, Lares Trek, Peru

Up and off at 5 am! Ugly! But after a 2 1/2 hour bus ride, were left to start the hike!

7 people to look after the 4 of us! Amazing. Weather is cool, but not raining, YET!

Only 1 other group seems to be starting at same time.

The trek started at Pata Cancha a small place about 1 hour up gravel/dirt roads from Ollantaytambo and continued on a loop to Yanahuara.

Amazing country side. Some of the climbs were tough, but this is the easy day!

Morning started off very nice, but rained most of the afternoon! Poured actually!

My $5 poncho has already paid for itself!

Walked for about 6 hours is total today! Exhausted but feel great as it is an accomplishment!

Off to bed about 8 pm. So early. Nice dry tent, and warm sleeping bag, and so quiet. Camp was at about 3600 meters.

February 14, Cusco, Peru

Spent most of day visiting the local ruins. Started at Tambomachay. This was nice as it was fountains. The ability to run the water was impressive.

Then to Puka Puakara, which was a place of rest.

Caught a taxi to the next place, Qenqo. Much digging still going on here! This is the sacred shrine to the sun and moon. Built into natural caves, there was a place of sacrifice.

Then to the last and largest. Saqsaywaman. This apparently looks like a puma from the air. But told we need some imagination! This is huge with 3 different levels. The stone work again is very impressive. This one was more fortress like.

February 13, Cusco, Peru

Up for breakfast and off in van to bus station at 7.30 am. Caught a local bus to Cusco. 389 km but takes about 7 hours!

Cusco is at about 3600 meters so a bit on cool side. Hotel is close to main square so great to be able to walk around. Very nice city but full of tourists and all shops geared to the tourist.

Did not do much.

February 12, Puno, Peru

Can not believe it! Not awake until 5.30, great sleep!

Breakfast of fried flat bread (flour, water, milk) and tea, very good. Tea was peppermint from fresh picked patch somewhere as I saw the daughter head off down the hill.

Only took about 15 minutes to walk down to the dock to catch the boat. And were sent off by the elders - handshakes and embraces and many mucho gracias.

On the boat for about 1 1/2 hours to the reed village. Reeds grow in water and are used to make the islands, boats and for food. The reeds are about 3 meters thick and have to be replaced about each month by just piling more on top. The buildings appear to be on a wood base that just gets lifted up when they add more reeds to the top of island. On this island there are 6 families. Interesting as the island is not really that big, so they do not get a lot of exercise, and it shows!

After a short presentation, with props of how the island is made, we were taken by different ladies to their homes. Kind of breaks the whole thing when there is solar panels and tvs! Oh well. Brief look at home but then shown the various crafts that they have made for sale! The went for a boat ride on reed boat - actually a catamaran! Paddled by 2 people. Slow going but our boat was not as loaded down as one of the others out on the water. The boats are made with reeds tied tightly together. That is the traditional way, it appears the modern way is to tie up empty pop bottles in blue tarps and then wrap the whole thing in reeds! Looks just the same!

After a 30 minute ride back to Puno port, headed off for coffee! It is noon, and have not had coffee yet, not a pretty sight! Got my coffee and then headed off on tour to Sillistani funeral towers.

About 30 minute bus ride out of Puno, these towers are of 2 types. Pre-Inca (700 AD to 1200) and Inca (1200 to 1500), all situated at the top of a hill which took a bit to climb. The pre-inca are made of rough stone whereas the Inca are smooth carved outside. Each are round and each tower is for 1 person. They are buried with all the treasures they will need for the after world. There are internal walls which seem to be sealed. The door of the towers all face east.

Back in Puno went to the Coca Museum. After a short film about the various dances in the area, wandered through an exhibit about the history and benefits of the coca leaf! This seemed to be a promotion for the use of Coca. Only 1 of the 14 components of the coca leaf is used to make cocaine. They have dated use back 20,000 years and used by many, including some higher ups in the church! Guess that makes it ok! The display included reference to the use of it in Coka Cola, but did not say when the coke recipe stopped using the coca leaf.

By the time finished, it was time for a short group meeting and then for dinner.

After dinner went out to a Regge bar. They had coca beer on the drink menu, but they did not have any! Too bad, would have been just another of the coca 'products' to try!

February 11, Puno, Peru

Onto boat to Tequille Island, as self contained and governed community of 2000 people.

Beautiful island, but to get to top had to walk up about 300 meters, and we are already at 3800 meters. Lost breath a couple of times, but guide gave us a peppermint smelling plant to breathe in, which seemed to help with the breathing. Also smelled nice.

The main square is at the top of village with the town hall, nice view, and markets around the outside. Very nice as the sun has come out. Nice lunch, another set menu which seems to be the trend. Soup and main course for 20 soles (about $8). Had the trout! Very good, as it should be as the rainbow trout were introduced to lake from Canada.

Very interesting as the average life span is 65 to 70. Not really that old.

The lake itself is huge, 165 km long and 60 km wide (at widest point). 3800 meters above sea level, it is the highest navigable lake above 2000 meters in the world.

Nice walk around one part of island and onto boat to go to homestay village.

What welcome. The senior people for island met us at the dock, as well we had our own welcoming band. Big drum, snare drum, flute and guitar! Very nice.

After another bit of a climb to the village centre, ended up in a soccer game against some of the local kids! Damn, they were good, and with breathing tough going, it was a lot of exercise. I had to be 2 times the age of most of the others. Dubbed ourselves the 'Los Condors', we did ok with the couple of ringers we adopted (the boat captain and his assistant). Final score 5 to 2, for them! Lots of fun.

Then off to homestay. Another 30 minute walk, with most up hill again! We had a very nice room with 3 beds and a separate toilet. Was great! Bed more comfortable than most, but with 4 blankets, the covers weighed a ton! Big effort just to roll over!

Dinner was an excellent soup and a stewed type vegetable mixture and rice. Very good.

Stayed with a mother and her youngest daughter. Mother was 48, daughter 16 (the youngest of 8 children. All the other children are apparently married and living in Puno. Or at least that is what we could figure out as they did not speak English and we do not speak Spanish. Good thing for a small phrase book!

They said good night to us at 7.30 but we talked until 8.30, as wake up call was not going to be until 7 am! Much too early to go to bed.

February 10, Puno, Peru

On the road by 8 am and arrived in Puno at about 2 pm. Long ride but seemed to go by fast. Stopped at the 'triple' tea place again. This time the sun was shining.

Stopped as well at the highest point along the way, about 4500 m. There was even a snowman and snow on ground.

Along the way saw a vizcacha, a rabbit look a like animal, but with a long tail.

Also saw many flamingos, cormorants, coots, ducks, llamas, alpacas other unknown birds.

Did a short walk around the city centre. Staying in a guest house very close to the main square. Nice place and appears to have been recently renovated, but the rooms are very small as is the bathroom. You need to hop over the toilet to get to shower! Still this is not the smallest I have experienced.

Puno is at about 3800 m. Some people being affected by altitude but, knock on wood, I have been ok.

February 9, Colca Valley, Peru

Early rise at 5.30 am, 6 am breakfast and in van at 6.30 for 2 hour ride up the valley. The deepest valley in the world. The mountains now covered in snow after all the rain yesterday, but turned out to be a nice sunny day. The terrace work is amazing. Half way up the mountain sides. Some narrow some wide, depending on the the steepness of the the hill.

Took a 1 hour walk along the valley wall which is at an altitude of about 3900 meters.. Very nice. The bottom of the valley was mostly covered in cloud, but the visibility was changing all the time.

Stopped at a look out and actually saw some Andean Condors sitting on a rock. Apparently it is the nesting season. Further up the valley there were about 7 or 8 condors soaring above the road! They are huge! 3 meter wing span, riding the thermals created by the now sunny day! There are about 48 condors in the valley and the population is slowing growing. The young do not leave the nest until they are about 2 1/2 years old.

Gave some locals rides again as the bus service is not reliable.

To the local hot springs in evening, and the dinner and traditional dance show.

February 8, Colca Valley, Peru

Left city for the valley. Stopped at about 4900 m for tea. This was after stopping in the city at a market to stock up on products for the trip. The products are all made from the coca leaf. Yes the plant used to manufacture cocaine! Well you can get just the leaf, cookies, hard candies, lollipops, coca sours (coca added to a Pisco Sour) and several kinds of toffee all made from coca! They are supposed to help with altitude sickness! Needless to say the store did a booming business! Almost everyone on bus bought at least 2 types of 'product' and there were a couple of other buses stop while we were there.

The stop for tea was nice. You can buy tea with a 'blend' of 3 things - mint, coca and chachacoma. All natural of course! Tasted not to bad, the mint was the strongest flavour!

A few stops along the way to see the other 'camel' type animal, the vicuna. Related to the camel as are the llama and alpaca. The vicuna has the finest wool of the 3 and goes for about $350 a kilo.

Stopped in Chivay for lunch. Buffet, and as usual ate way too much!

Then to hotel. By this time it is pouring rain, and we are supposed to have a hike! Well hike cancelled but instead took a short walk to the town square, around the church yard and some back roads back to hotel. Arrived soaking wet! And cold.

By time we got back the hotel had turned on the (very) small gas heaters in rooms. Did not put out much heat. Ended up in hotel lounge for happy hour, sitting around the fire. Very nice.

Ate alpaca, a very popular meat. Was very good. It is a very fine grained meat and a pleasant taste.

Too bed early! Again!

February 7, Arequipa, Peru

Bus was scheduled to depart at 10 pm but ended up being close to midnight!

10 hours on the bus, but have to say quite comfortable. Seats reclined a long way and still had a lot of leg room.

Arrived about 10 am and off to Hostal Solar! Wow, what a great places. Nice big clean rooms, with very nice sitting areas.

spent the rest of morning and early afternoon walking around the older part of the city. All looks new and neat. Most built since 1500 under Spanish.

Guide took us on a quick tour around the old part of the city. Then headed for the monastery. A huge place built in the 1500s and is still in use today. There have been many reconstructions due to earthquakes but apparently the originality of the place has been retained. The buildings were very nice to look at. Very colourful with read geraniums.

Was surprised to find that the nun's rooms were as large as they were, and many had there own ovens and small kitchen.

Then just walked around the city. Full of great doors and courtyards!

February 6, on the overnight bus, Peru

Awake very early morning so sat by pool. Very nice. Just next door is a prickly pear cactus field. This is used to attract the cochineal bug for its red dye. Very lucrative crop. $400 per kilo for the powder.

Breakfast and then off to fly over Nasca Lines. Amazing sight. Many animals and human figures and also straight lines. Look perfect from the air. My pictures do not do them justice. A few in plane were a bit green with all the tilting over the various marks.

Then to Chauchilla Cemetery. Here there are many tombs which were unfortunately robbed. Some have been restored. The people were buried in rooms underground, in the fetal position, facing east and with the items they would need in the next life.

February 5, Nasca, Peru

Easy morning wandering around small fishing village. Quiet and small.

Then into van. Short drive to a Pisco distillery. Interesting as they still crush the grapes with their feet, but have the feeling this is only done during the week long party they have during the harvest! Pisco is an alcohol distilled from grapes.

Tasted many of them, some good some not so good! Pisco sours (Pisco, lime juice, and egg white blended with ice) have become the happy hour drink!

About another hour and a stop at an oasis, Huacalchina. Here went dune bugging on some huge sand dunes! Also got to try sand boarding. Tried standing but spent most of my time on my ass. I guess the snow boarding lesson of 6 years ago is lost! And the 1 day on a board did not help. Tried a couple of times on stomach, much faster and a great ride! As I was wearing sandals I did not have any brakes! That was okay though, liked the speed! Simple a board with velco straps and slightly up curved ends like a snow board. A bit different but still fun, despite the sand getting everywhere!!!!!

Swim in pool after was great and made the 3 hour bus ride after more tolerable!

So flat! With nothing growing and then green areas. Water comes from wells.

Somewhere took wrong turn as crossed the Rio Grande river and were in Sacramento!

Stopped at the Nasca Lines tower along side of Pan American highway, just outside of Nasca.

Short wander around Nazca, to the bank and to the grocery store.

Stayed in a hacienda type place, San Marcelo. Very nice and very quiet! Swimming pool as well.

February 4, Paracus, just outside of Pisco, Peru

Actually had a free morning so spent walking the streets around the hotel. Just after lunch got a private bus to bus station to catch public bus. At times standing room only. Arrived at Pisco, then 30 minute to small fishing village of Paracus. Very quiet place geared to fishing and tourists going to a nature preserve island just off the coast. Had dinner and a Pisco Sour, which the area is famous. The drive along coast on Pan American was very dry, maybe 2 mm rain each year.

much sand and rocky mountains. Most of the places there is no vegetation! Not even weeds. Found out later that there are 4 birds living on this type of land and some insects and lizards. Not much but still interesting to look at!

February 3, Quito to Lima, Peru

Last day in Quito. Hired Marco again to take us to the Cloud forest. Stopped first at the Pululahua crater. An almost extinct volcano. Some steam activity has started. about 400 m down to the floor of a huge crater. All farms on the floor around a mini volcano in the middle of the crater. There is a trail that winds up the wall of the volcano. Quite a climb. When we arrived a man was standing waiting for a woman (his wife?) who was carrying the load! Typical in Ecuador.

Marco showed us various plants used for different purposes, mostly for curing some aliment. There is one that is a hallucinogenic. Coco of some sort. Small dark berries, that have a very bright red colour to them.

Then to a reserve that is on the edge of the cloud forest area. The hummingbirds were every where. 32 different species in the area, and if you watched for about 2 hours, you would be able to see about 18 species. Also many people come to so a Crested Questzal. We saw about 4 but could not get a good picture.

Then on way back stopped at an Equator museum. Many demonstrations about the effects of the magnets pulls. Water on the equator flows straight out. In the south in a clock wise direction.

Also some strength is lost while standing on the equator. Also some interesting displays of tribal homes and customs, including a tribe that used to practice head shrinking.

Still done now, but on animals.

Back to airport for 8.40 pm departure to Lima.

February 2, Galapagos to Quito, Ecuador

Up at 4.30 am for a 5.30 am departure from the boat. As the Dutch girl said, this is not really a holiday when you have to get up that early!

A mixture of travel modes today. Zodiac, truck taxi, walk, large bus, and a passenger ferry and plane.

Off to the Charles Darwin Research Centre, on Santa Cruz Island. This is the home of 'Lonesome George', the giant tortoise that is the last of his species. He has 2 new resident females of a similar species in the hopes of offspring. Wait and see as he lived with 2 others for 20 years and nothing. Apparently not a compatible species.

This centre also has a large breeding centre for the different types of tortoises. Dome, saddleback and Flat.

Then on bus to ferry to cross to the Island of Balta to catch the plane back to Quito. A bit on the chaotic side, but made the flight.

Did not do much back in Quito. Had about 5 pounds of clothes washed at laundry down street for $1. Can't do it that cheap at home! Life is good! Washed, dried and neatly folded!

Dinner at local restaurant. Very nice fish in lemon sauce.

February 1, Galapagos, Ecuador

Awake, sort of, at 5 am!!! Off for a walk on Puerto Egas, a black sand beach.

Amazing as during walk a flycatch kept landing on people. Their shoulders, fingers and even checking out their reflection in camera lenses!

More iguanas, sea lions, and fur seals. But saw a sea turtle from a view point but best part was snorkeling while one was grazing on the sea bed floor! This island had a salt mine in the 1920s but the guy went bankrupt when salt on mainland was discovered.

Then motored to Rabida Island for about 3 hours. Most of the time frigate birds were riding the air wave from the boat. This is a red sand beach. Did a short walk around part of the island. Many cactus loaded with flower. Then for the afternoon snorkel. This beach has many of the same kind of fish but while out there a few dolphins went swimming by!!! Not worried by us in the water. Tried to catch but....... not a chance!

January 31, Galapagos, Ecuador

Another early rise! At Chinese Hat for walk

saw a 1 day old sea lion pup on walk, as well as frigate birds, crabs. Interesting as crabs are black when young and as they age and spend more time in sun they become very colorful.

A walk along beach and there are many turtle tracks going up the beach to nest.

Snorkel in deep water that was very clear. Many colourful fish, sting rays, sea urchins. Even saw an octopus being chased by several other small fish!

Boat made way to Bartolome Island. The snorkeling here was good but not as clear. Spotted 3 or 4 sleeping sharks. Did not wake them!

Motored again for about 6 hours! The water was very rough and there were a few people turning a bit green. Many did not go to bed until after 9, which has been late, as that is when we anchored.

January 30, Galapagos, Ecuador

Up at 6.30 am for pickup for the 3 hour flight from Quito to Galapagos. Airport is on Balta, but the town site is Santa Cruz on a different island.

Lunch on boat, the Pelikano, and off to walk and snorkel at Los Bachus beach. The walk was great. Nice golden coloured sand with many turtle tracks to nesting areas. Saw 3 flamingos is a brackish lagoon. Also many iguanas and sea lions. Took way too many pictures which I later deleted. Also saw many more during the days to follow.

The snorkeling was good, but not that clear of water. Many fish and the beach was fairly busy.

The first night on the boat! Room is small with bunk beds! I ended up on the top bunk, which was also much smaller than the lower bunk. Not a lot of head room either, but it is a bed.

The evening was spent watching the pelicans and sharks feeding around the boat. Surprisingly the pelicans would stay in the water with the sharks circling around. Some of the sharks were at least 2 meters.

January 29, Quito, Ecuador

Booked a tour to Otavalo Market. Apparently the largest remaining market in South America for native handicrafts.

First stop was at small monument for the crossing of the Equator. Interesting as there was a football field, including nets set up on the side street.

Then stopped at a biscuit shop. The town is known for its biscuits. There were still warm. Dry but tasty. Not sure how to describe. Interesting that each small town has its claim to fame! Greenhouses, orchids, dairy, biscuits and tequila!

Short stop at a farm. The lane was very nice. Long and tree lined, but with a mud bricked fence between each of the trees.

A nice little place with rooms for rent as well. The place was started in mid 1500s.

Stopped for a drink at small shop along side of road and 3 ladies were bbqing 'rata', yes 'rata' is rat in Spanish. At first a bit gross thinking about it, but actually did not smell too bad! Skinned and gutted and put on a stick. According to Marco the guide/driver these rats are caught in the wild and the country rats are better tasting as they eat better, grasses and what ever else they eat! Still did not try. Marco like to eat rat!

The road, the Pan American highway, to the market is along and through many deep valleys. Very green with hundreds of greenhouses along the way.

The market was huge as it is Saturday. A large square and many of the side streets with stalls. Much beautiful items, mostly wool products, sheep, alpaca the most popular.

Then visited a leather town. Here many shops with all kinds of leather. Was in one shop and tried on 1 jacket. Ended up trying many! Nice jackets for about $120.

The market is about 2 hours north of Quito.

January 28, Quito, Ecuador

Off to explore the old city!

Walked by The Casa de la Cultura after walking through a university. Very nice with much building going on. Turns out, Marco's kids go to this university. Private, about $800 per month per person!

Went La Basilica built about 1890 of concrete and brick in the gothic style. Great as was able to take this narrow, loose wooden walk way throught the attic above the main part of the church. This lead to one of the towers where you could climb to the top. Great views! Added bonus was kids painted gothic enjoying some wine at the top!

Then to Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus. A church that is done completely in gold leaf! Quite nice. But looks like there had been a fire.

Wandered into a market. Seemed to be the metal bashing place. Black smiths everywhere making metal gates. Have not seen many of them for ages. Marco the guide later told us that is the market where you can buy anything! Most of the items stolen! Which does explain why there seemed to be so many

Visited the grand plaza which is surrounded by the Government buildings, Municipal buildings and a hotel. A very nice plaza with lots of people around. Including the demonstration about something. Never did figure it out.

Visited Sanfrancisco church as well. Built in 1530s it is the oldest church in the city. Pouring rain when left so caught a taxi to hotel. $4 for 20 minute ride.

Had dinner at hotel where we got a free drink. A green warm drink made from the naracicha flower (?). Quite good. I think the name is Carne lasa which does not make sense as carne is beef in Spanish.

The waiter learned our names and he did not forget. Called me by name the morning after returning from Galapagos.

January 27, Quito, Ecuador

Got a little bit of sleep. Up for coffee and a relax in the very nice court yard. The guest house that took me in was very nice. Small and quiet.

The woman at the front desk called GAP and got things straightened out, including a van pick up to take me back to the hotel I went to originally last night.

Checked into hotel and went off for a walk. Quito is at about 2800 meters. Surprisingly you can feel the difference. Always seem to be trying to catch breath. Not bad but have to be careful as occassionaly when walk a bit too fast I did feel light headed. Quito is surrounded by mountains which always had clouds rolling over them. Very pretty.

Watched 3 on 3 volleyball type game in one park. Many people watching. Different slightly as the net was much higher than volleyball. Interesting as it seems most Ecuadorians are shorter than I am, so they have higher to jump. But this game does not seem to have the spiking! Maybe the net height is the reason!

Wandered around the area for a couple of hours, but was so tired went back to hotel for a nap. Took it easy for the rest of the day.

Jayne arrived later that night, talked a bit.

January 24 to January 26, Somewhere over Pacific

Got taken out for dinner at local pub by friends and given a new hoodie! A hint that good riddance and stay away? Not sure! But still very nice of them!

Up extra early to catch plane to Sydney. Just over an hours flight.

On plane to Santiago with stop in Auckland. Just short of 3 hours to Auckland and then almost 11 hours to Santiago.

Crossed the Date line, so repeating the 26. Interesting to leave in early morning, arrive in New Zealand late in afternoon, and then see the see come up not too long later.

Arrived in Santiago about noon, and had a 3 hour wait for next flight to Quito, Ecuador.

6 hour flight to Quito. Arrived about 9 pm. Off to hotel, no reservation! And voucher had different hotel name, so in taxi to that place. No reservation here either. Too tired to do anything, so had a beer and off to bed!

Australia 2010

January 22 to 23, Melbourne, Australia

Out at people's house in the suburbs. Great seeing the people again. Great to have a nice swim and a few drinks around the pool.

Received an official Australian hat to wear as gift!

Went to the local jazz festival for a bit, but very quiet, too early as they were just setting up. Interesting that the wine places had set up but not the food ones!

January 20 to 21, Melbourne, Australia

Not doing much but exploring more of the city area. Finally received my passport and visa! Only 3 days late!

January 19, Melbourne, Australia

Off to the Australian Open today. Great day. Saw 2 good matches. Watched a Canadian, Marino, play against a top seeded Italian. She did not start off great but improved as the match continued and the Canadian put in a very strong performance.

January 18, Melbourne, Australia

Still in Australia! Passport/visa did not arrive from Brazil!

Spent the day wandering through parks. Went to Fitzroy Gardens and the Captain Cook's Cottage. Small place, 2 levels, and very similar to other places.

Gardens/park was very nice. Great to have some sun out, after the wind and rain on the Gold Coast. Queensland still getting lots of rain.

Then walked to Botanical Gardens. Had to walk by the tennis centre where the Australian Open has started. Good views.

Botanical Gardens are huge and very nice.

January 17, Melbourne, Australia

Spent most of the day on phone changing flights as visa for Brazil did not arrive. Very disappointed as now not going to Tahiti or Easter Island.

Spent 1 1/2 hours sitting in plane while they sorted out a baggage problem. Not nice, but at least got a free coffee (instant!) out of it!

Arrived back in Melbourne, and off to bbq. A farewell, sort of, as not sure if going to get away!

Great time.

Then off to Williamstown for a Ghost walk through the old parts of the city. Great, no ghosts, but did see many older houses and heard some stories about some of the buildings. 3 hours later and no ghosts sighted, the tour finished.

January 12 to 14, Coraki, Australia

Caught the bus to Ballina. Wouldn't you know it, the day I leave the weather is beautiful. Sun shining and the wind not blowing as hard!

Could not leave the TV as it was showing the floods in Brisbane.

Friend met me at the bus stop, actually a shelter on the street.

Next day went for a drive. Visited Evans Head, Byron Bay, Lismore, Bangalow,.

Next day met up with another woman from Iceland trip. She met us half way from Tenterfield. We me half way in Tabulam. Small country town, 1 store, 1 cafe, 1 pub!

Spent the time having coffee under a tree and catching up on trips and travel. Looked at photos of Vietnam as they are planning a trip and also reminiscing about Iceland!

January 10 to 11, Gold Coast, Australia
Booked a tour to the Australia Zoo, the Steve Irwin zoo, the by Crikey guy! On the bus and the driver was trying to find out if the road was open. In the middle of the worst flooding in decades! Turns out the road is open but the Zoo received 130 mm of rain the night before and is flooded. They have closed for 2 days! Instead went for a walk. Got wet and dried off about 3 times! Amazing. Fairly bright out but shower going through. The wind has not stopped since I arrived. Funny as you can stand out of the wind and not get wet! Rain 'falling' horizontal!!!!! Not the best weather for a beach resort! But sure it is very nice when weather is good!
Not much to say as I have not been doing much.

January 7 to 9, Gold Coast, Australia

Flew to Gold Coast, only 2 hours flying. Flew with Jetstar! Talk about chaos in the airport! Huge line ups, made worse by them calling people in line to the head of the line as their flights were closer! Needs a lot of work. But made it.

Only a 2 hour flight. and then a 30 minute bus ride. Weather is cloudy with sunny breaks, and showers rolling through. But warm even with the strong winds.

Beach is amazing. Huge, it runs for miles and the sand is very fine.

The area has many high rise apartments and hotels and way too much shopping for my liking, but oh well.

Have done lots of walking along the beach. Interesting to see life savers along the beach. In some places there are lots of people and in others very few. There is so much beach.

January 6, Melbourne, Australia

Very lazy and have not been doing much. Went over to friends place for a swim and over night. Then they took me to Monsalvat, an artist's community in the suburbs. Great location and the buildings, although only built in 1930s, looked very old. Nice to just wander around. A few pieces of art on display but no artists working.

Had a great night as I went to a couple's place that were on the Iceland tour! Was so nice to see them and hear about their trip through Scandinavia after they left Iceland.

December 31, Melbourne, Australia Happy New year to all!

A couple of friends and I did the 'Edge' today! This is on the 88th floor of new building. It is a elevator type room that slides out from the side of the building. Then after some sound effects of moaning and groaning, the glass clears and you can look straight down through the floor to the street below. The views are great as was a super day for looking around the city, 360 degrees.

Then off to a New Years Eve Party. Great time but home early at about 1.30 am

Did a day tour with friends to Cape Liptrap. Great as sun shining and not too cool. Had a great lunch in pub close to beach and then off to point. Saw a lighthouse and an echidna along side of road. Nice to get out into the country.

Merry Christmas. Great day, weather was warm and spent the day with friends family. About 20 people including 4 younger ones. Ate way too much, of course, and Santa Claus even found me! Received some great gifts from friends, even one from friends from home!

December 16, Canberra, Australia

Went to the Canberra Glassworks this morning. This is an artist site in the old steam power generating station. The glassworkers rent out the space to work. The initially blow the glass but then work the glass with paddles to shape the designs. Amazing what they do with glass that is glowing red hot.

Caught the bus to the Australian Mint. This is the facility that makes all the Australian coins as well as coins for other countries. Much of the plant is automated with robots. They even had an 2010 Vancouver Olympic hockey puck with a lucky loonie on display.

Had lunch in a quiet park in the city. Seemed to be lots of Xmas parties going on. Interesting to see people drinking in a public park!

People here are so polite. Every time you get on the bus you get a 'good morning' or a couple of time a 'g'day' and everyone thanks the driver when they get off.

December 15, Canberra, Australia

Up early and off to Australian Institute of Sport. This is a 30 year old facility. Built after a poor Olympic performance at Montreal in 1976. Very hi tech training equipment is used. All athletes are on scholarship. Covers the common Olympic sports but also unusual ones like motorbike racing. Very interesting. The pool has underwater viewing areas as well as moving underwater cameras.

Then off to Parliament Hill for another tour. Amazing building. A lot of Australian woods used as well as European marble. The Flag pole is huge and is directly over the centre of the building. The view from the roof, under the flag pole is great. There is a direct line to the War Memorial and the hill behind the Memorial.

Went into the House of Representatives and the Senate House. Senators in Australia are elected. Also sat in on a Senate Enquiry into the changing of bank mortgage fees. Interesting as the bankers were there arguing about competition. Could not make out the connection other than they will loose huge revenues if law changes. 3 Senators and 6 bankers and no one in the gallery. But this has been going on for a while.

Then headed to the Old Parliament. The old building is from 1923, but the redecorating is definitely mostly 60s and 70s. Which makes sense as the new building was opened in 1988.

December 14, Canberra, Australia

tour of War Memorial

Walking tour of ANZAC parade, several sculptures dedicated to various war veterans. All very interesting.

This is the street that runs between the War Memorial and Parliament Hill.

Headed off to the National Museum. But only had about 1 hour to go through it. Bit of a rush but not too bad. Many exhibits about the history of Australia.

There was a special Captain Cook exhibit. That was interesting covering his travels in the area. Also had some of his navigating tools on display.

There was also a huge exhibit of Aboriginal art work with the theme of the Canning Stock route. This was a cattle drive route in Western Australia that ran 1000s of miles through Aboriginal lands.

December 13, Canberra, Australia

Up fairly early and off to embassy to apply for visa. Walked! Only took about an hour but then had to walk another hour to get money order to pay for visa ($119). About half the price of the US visas but more than the Australian visas.

Then walked into the city and to the tourist information. Another 1 1/2 hour walk. Got into a new hotel, but fairly expensive at $139 but not much else around and this was the cheapest. Government city causes this I am told.

Caught the bus back to other hotel to pick up my bag which made life easier, and then spent a hour down by the pool. Very nice. Sunny all day today which was great after all the rain the last few days. Not hot but still sunny, about mid 20s.

Spent the day with friends in Lilydale. Actually did more shopping in morning and then just sat in back yard talking.

Got a ride to airport in evening after a great dinner. Roast chicken.

Plane to Canberra is only about 1 hour.

Talked to the guy sitting next to me most of the trip. He had been to an ultimate frisbee tournament for the weekend and was on his way home. He was from North Queensland.

In the end he gave me a ride to my hotel. Great hospitality! His comments was that it would come around to him, and he is so right!

Was late.

December 9 to 11, Lilydale (suburb of Melbourne), Australia

Visiting friends. Great area which is really almost country! The city is about 1 hours drive from city centre and there are many gum trees and bush in the area.

Spent one afternoon walking around the local lake. Man made but has some great park and picnic areas.

Went to birthday party one night. Great fun. Hilarious as I get so many comments about my name! Not hearing any new ones but still interesting.

Great time just catching up with friends.

I have not seen the 'kids' for 20 years, and at 26, 24 and 32 now, they have changed a lot. Great kids.

December 7 & 8, Melbourne, Australia

Staying with friends that live in the south part of the city. Great as access to city is nice here.

Took the tram down to my old shopping area. Many changes have gone on here. Many new cafes along the street and many have been dressed up and are very trendy looking. Good changes having said that. Surprised to see that Luna Park, an amusement park still is around. Walked back to house along the beach. So nice. Great beach area that runs all along the city.

December 5 & 6, Melbourne, Australia

Slept in this morning until about 7.30 am! Too many late nights I guess.

Lazy coffee morning. Then out to yard to do some weeding.

Then watching the golf and cricket! The cricket not going so well so not on the tv as much! England up a lot!

Actually attended my first Xmas dinner! Was lucky enough to tag along with friends.

December 4, Melbourne, Australia

Another leisurely coffee and then off to the city.

Stopped at the Queen Victoria Market. This has changed. Now many of the stalls are souvenir type things and not as much day to day living need things.

Then walked into the city and toward the Docklands area. This is a completely redeveloped area. This areas was used as the docking area for the Volvo race lay over. Very nice area with shops, apartments, bake shops, and coffee shops. But not many people are around as most of the stores have not opened yet.

Caught the tram to South Melbourne to meet up with the girls.

Then off to a dance recital of M's 8 year old daughter. The show was about 2 1/2 hours, and not too bad. They were very good about making the change to the next performance. A huge improvement I was told. The theatre was a great place for a small community theatre. The whole family was there and the younger ones where good about watching.

Back to the house for pizza.

Headed back to South Melbourne and R was in the house waiting. Or should I say keeping the cat company!

R gave me a ride back to N's.

The house in South Melbourne, 3 girls and a male cat. 3 people that I did not think that would ever get an animal, but have adopted a cat. Well the cat now rules the house and everything gets done for the cat. They talk more to the cat than each other!

December 3, Melbourne, Australia

So nice to be having coffee with N again. Of course, catching up with everyone's lives and what has been going on over the years.

Then off to catch up with JC. Not sure why but going shopping with her and M. But I did not realize the 2 youngest boys were going as well. But turned out ok, the boys where good. 4 and 2 years old. After hours of shopping, finally got some lunch, and then off to another store! Bit more than what I was expecting.

Had a BBQ at friends of the girls out in Eltham. Took a bit to get there as the traffic was bad, but at least we were still moving. Took about 1 hour.

Arrived and got into the beers. Beer at the store can be on sale so have to watch. $29 for 24 of Corona! Regular is $49 (Canadian and Australian $ as close to the same)

Great BBQ and good to see them again, although I do not remember meeting as was 20 years ago! We talked a bit about the New Years Eve party held in JW's parking lot under a tent! Met a lot of people then and now meeting some of them again, but I do not remember.

Got back to N's fairly late. Another late one!

Forgot how these guys are always on the go!

Arrived at about 7.30 am. Got some sleep but not a lot. JW picked me up and off to see her Mom. Great to see them. They have not changed a bit! Short visit and then off to South Melbourne as she had to get to work. While she did that I took a walk along the banks or The South Yarra. This whole area has been developed with high rises, conference centers, casino and apartment buildings. 20 years ago there were mostly warehouses, so it is a very nice change. They have gone very 'artsy' with sculptures everywhere and very modern buildings. Caught up with JC and P. None of them have changed a bit!

After lunch took a quick walk into the city. Walked along Bourke street which is where the office was. This street has not changed much at all. The Myers windows are still done up with the theme this year as the Nutcracker.

December 1, Melbourne, Australia

In the air, on the ground, on the way to Melbourne, Australia

Up early, but I guess to early as I woke up the guys in the lobby! HIlarious, they were sleeping on cots behind the desk and on the floor in the breakfast area! And the motorbikes were parked in the breakfast area as well. It was only 6 am

Took 1 hour to get to airport, and then entered into total chaos. Hanoi airport is really small and yet seemed very busy. A lot of people around.

Short flight to Hong Kong, only 1 hour 20 minutes, but then had a 6 hour wait for flight to Melbourne. While taxiing in there was a A380 parked. It is huge and dwarfed all other planes.

Time went by fast as this is a shopping mecca! Every name brand you can imagine. I just looked. Had a coke and that cost HK$56 or $8. Ouch, and I was complaining about anything close to $1!!!!!

Airport is huge and the bonus is free wifi! Caught up on some emails.

Only an 8 1/2 hour flight from Hong Kong to Melbourne, no stops. Cathay Pacific has great service, lots of good food and FREE beers! Nice, so that makes the cheapest beers so far!

Nov 30, Hanoi, Vietnam

Took a walk to Hoa Lo Prison or Hanoi Hilton, the place where American POWs were kept during the war. What is left of it anyway. Most has been torn down and replaced by a high rise. This building was also the prison for political prisoners during the period when the French controlled the country. That was in the mid 1800s. Can't imagine staying there. Interesting as it seems the POWs had lots to do! Basketball, volleyball, nice looking dinners as well.....

Hired a cyclo (a rickshaw type bike) to take me to the Ho Chi Minh Museum. I was really heading to the Mausoleum but oh well. The museum is a very new building and contains many gifts that Ho Chi Minh received. The displays are really well done, with many of them in a modern art type presentation. If the sign did not say, I would have never figured some of them out. Then a short walk to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. This is where his body is on display, but was closed. I am told that each year viewings are stopped to allow for inspection and restoration needed. Apparently it was Russians that prepared his body.

Then to Ho Chi Minh house, the place where he lived and worked. Interesting that it is on the Palace grounds but it is a small modest place. Very well maintained. Some of his cars were on display as well. There was a beautiful house on stilts where he worked as well. Only a few people around any of these places.

Rode back with my driver. These guys really have to work hard, but I know that I am probably paying him very well. Was about a 30 minute ride through the traffic, one way. Amazing how these drivers make it through the traffic. Seemed to be rush hour and at times the traffic was stopped in the middle of the intersection, but somehow it gets moving again.

Vietnam is a great place to visit, but I am not going to miss the traffic or the horns. Also exhausting always having to bargain for things. Will be nice to get back where prices are marked!

Did not do much today!

Went to the Post office and mailed some stuff as my suitcase is getting too heavy. Do not want to pay more at airport!

Walked around the lake, Hoan Kiem Lake. Very nice with lots of people just sitting or walking.

Then walked the streets and got my hair cut. Nothing special happened except they cut it much shorter than I wanted. They did not figure out the clippers. Oh well, it will grow back.

Met the Belgian woman for dinner. Her farewell dinner as she leaves for Malaysia the next day. Was a nice dinner.

On way back to hotel I ran into a German guy we met in Hoi An. Ended up talking to him and the people he was with for a while, so was late by the time I got back to hotel.

Nov 28, Halong Bay, Vietnam

Up long before coffee was made, so sat on the top deck. Could not see the sun come up as it was very foggy. Still looked very nice.

Breakfast was just ok.

Off around 8.30 for a short cruise through more of the bay. Went to Fighting Cock Island. Never did figure out how it got its name! Best part was there were a bunch of boats fighting for the closest view. Pushing into the front, and then the horns started. And I though we had got away from that for a while!

Cruised back to the city, lunch at a restaurant and on the bus.

Was a long trip back as one baby cried all the way. That was not so bad, it was the parents singing and talking louder that the baby crying that was tough. Dull roar for most of the trip.

Nov 27, Halong Bay, Vietnam

4 hour bus ride, including stop at 'workshop'! Huge one and very expensive.

Amazing the number of buses and boats they can cram into a small space. And no one got lost!

Boarded the boat. The Elizabeth, of the Cristina Cruise Lines. Wow, absolutely great. My room has the best shower I have seen in months! 2 shower heads, and after shower you do not have to walk in the water, the floor is raised up on slats. All in very dark wood. Seems to have been recently done!

Only about 16 of us but then there are 3, 8 to 10 month old babies. They are Vietnamese babies that have been adopted 1 week ago by 3 Spanish families. Very cute babies. They are all from the same area, Barcelona, but the funny part is that another guy is from Barcelona as well. An Irish woman and a couple of German doctors make up the rest. A very nice group.

Lunch was excellent. Seafood everywhere, and plenty of it. Fresh fish, stuffed crab (my favourite), seafood soup.

Then off in the 'private' launch, I am treating this as my first cruise, to the Surprise cave! Well that was interesting, but there was such a crowd of people, it was follow the leader and get out as fast as possible.

Then to do a little bit of kayaking around the bay. Nice. But glad I did not spend too much time out there as the launch driver went between several kayakers on the way back to the boat! Some were very close!

Arrived back at boat about 5, and this was the time for the swim. The air had got cold and the sun was almost down so I passed but a couple of people did go in. I opted for the hot shower. Very nice!

Dinner was great as well. More fresh fish and some pork, at Least I think so. Very good.

There are ladies rowing boats all over the place between the boats selling goods. Beer, pop, chips, and water, of course 'cheap'!

The bay was quiet except for the sound of about 50 generators going on other boats and the single cylinder diesel engines on the fishing boats. Not really that bad but not as quiet as I expected.

Went up to the top deck after dinner for a beer, and we were entertained by the karaoke (and bad at that) on a boat nearby! Good thing it did not last that long.
